Black Caps Black Book .../Diary - Who Ya Got Here?
We need to make something very clear, we're in a position to win a Cricket World Cup and anything but a win will feel shit. Probably worse than had we suffered a status-quo semi final loss and we're pretty lucky that's there's a few days between our semi final and the final, we get to thoroughly enjoy the amazing win but we also get to eye up the final.
Think of how many World Cup finals we've been in, not many if any. These don't come around too often and while there's that fairytale touch, this could be our best and only shot at being the best in the world.
Today, Australia playing India. Who ya got?
The Black Caps have rightfully said that they don't care who they play, you wouldn't expect them to because their profession is doing the job against whoever is opposite them.
Luckily the mighty Niche Cache exists then huh?
Both serve up a few problems for our Black Caps. Australia's pace bowling are definitely up there with the best and given that Dale Steyn was made to look like a stock standard medium pacer, I'd put Australia's attack equal with ours. Whether it's Mitchell Starc or Josh Hazlewood, Australia have bowlers who move the ball around and we haven't really had to deal with high quality bowling a whole lot.
India have spinners and we saw the impact that Imran Tahir had in the semi. But South Africa couldn't back him up well enough, JP Duminy didn't step up and even AB de Villiers bowled a few. India don't have that shortage of options with Ravi Jadeja and Suresh Raina able to provide plenty of substance once Ravi Ashwin's spell is winding down. In general, the Black Caps seem far more comfortable against pace. Brendon McCullum likes to whack the pace, Martin Guptill has long had a few issues against slow bowling and most of our bit hitting at the death has been against quicker bowlers. India will slow it down against us, posing a new threat.
Now we'd all take our batting line up over anyone at this stage, but let's be honest both Australia and India have better batsmen than us. They might now be better right now, but they're just better batsmen in all formats over time. They have been around big stages, they have scored runs everywhere and in the past few months both India and Australia have played nearly all their cricket, if not at the MCG then in the bigger stadiums of Australia.
This is the time where you really start to see why these teams are the best in the world. All four teams in the semi finals play cricket at such a high level and have copious amounts of talent. That's why the Black Caps won't be too fussed who they play, either way they will come up against a cricketing beast.
But we need to think of the Black Caps as a cricketing beast as well. Sure, let's amp up the underdog idea but we belong in the World Cup final. Let's not act like the overwhelmed kiwi, we belong here because we're good enough and a win is the only goal.
Enjoy the show today, you've never watched a World Cup semi final like this. You've never been so interested in a match between Australia and India, their next step is us. Our lads await whoever is good enough to make it to the final showdown.
