Roger & Novak

A pair of poems for a pair of legends.

Written by The Wildcard

Roger

The echo of racket on ball,

Propelled through the air

Over net and across grass.

So graceful and precise

That it makes the impossible

Seem casual

A cross-court forehand

A backhand down the line

Brown hair flapping over a white Nike headband

Novak

Beads of sweat are swept away

With the swipe of a towel

He takes his place,

Bouncing the ball,

Repeatedly,

Incessantly,

Before launching it skywards and

Leaning back into a powerful serve.

His eyes betray nothing but a steely determination

He is never beaten, never out.

He will take the best you have to offer and

Send it back

Unplayable.
