White Ferns In UAE: The Squad

Bates with the mana.

After dishing out some contracts, Haidee Tiffen has named her Aotearoa White Ferns squad to tour United Arab Emirates later this month. Despite things appearing to be fairly stock-standard on the back of those contracts, I was surprised to get some low key funk in this WF squad and we obviously can't assume how squads will be selected based on those contracts. Duh.

Before getting on to that funk, as a youngster myself and someone who believes that youth is driving a golden era across most kiwi sports (and youth will save the world), I view it as important to highlight that this WF squad features the full young gun cast. All the young guns who earned contracts have been selected and that's bloody exciting; Maddy Green (24yrs), Thamsyn Newton (22yrs), Leigh Kasperek (25yrs), Amelia Kerr (16yrs), Hannah Rowe (21yrs).

Two of those youngsters will form the centre of my attention in the UAE as Kasperek and Kerr will be key weapons for Aotearoa in spin-friendly conditions. Anna Peterson will also play her role in that, giving Aotearoa a spin-trio to work with, but Kasperek and Kerr in particular will be a major point of intrigue. How Tiffen juggles the spinners game by game will play its role as well; we could see three spinners used frequently, or two of the three main spinners with help from Amy Satterthwaite's tweakers.

These three spinners benefit from Erin Bermingham's knee injury, giving them an opportunity to demand further selection. With so much spin depth, Bermingham may find it difficult to work her way back into a strongest squad, only if the three spinners picked impress though.
