White Ferns In UAE: Game Two Win vs Pakistan
Slightly different team, same result for Aotearoa's White Ferns as they put together another glorious performance against Pakistan. Aotearoa restricted and dismissed Pakistan for 147 in 49.1 overs, before chasing their target of 148 down in just 24 overs and this win puts the kiwis up in 2nd on the Women's Championship table. Keep in mind though that Pakistan are joined by Sri Lanka as being the two weakest teams in this competition, so these results are more a case of handling business than anything else.
There are two angles to this result in the second ODI as coach Haidee Tiffin continues to tinker with her team and the kiwis have enjoyed sublime back-to-back contributions from Sophie Devine, Leigh Kasperek and Amelia Kerr.
The top-five were exactly the same, with changes being made in the bowling ranks. Hannah Rowe and Anna Peterson came into the team for Holly Huddleston and Thamsyn Newton, with both Rowe and Peterson playing their roles perfectly. I'm making a theme of ensuring that I look at this Aotearoa bowling attack beyond Kerr because the mainstream/lazy jokers who report on the White Ferns (there aren't many mainstream jokers who give the Ferns their due) focus on the teenage phenom that is leg-spinner Kerr.
Kerr was up to her standard antics in this second game, taking 3 wickets @ 3.50rpo. Rowe stood up in her opportunity to take 2w @ 2.83rpo and both of her wickets were in Pakistan's top-four, including the key wicket of Pakistani skipper Bismah Maroof who was doing a fine job in anchoring the innings. Rowe trapped her lbw on 36, with Pakistan 103/5 and without their skipper, Pakistan could only go on to score 147.
Kasperek continues to impress as well and she's always going to be the low key yin to Kerr's yang. Kasperek took 2w @ 3.10rpo and the kiwi spinners were the only bowlers to bowl their 10 overs and they've accounted for almost half of Pakistan's wickets thus far, taking 9/20 between them.
I highlighted after the first game how Devine had bounced back from a fairly slow Women's T20 Super League campaign in England in hitting consecutive hundreds; one for South Australia and one for Aotearoa. Devine didn't hit her third, but a third notable score is just as funky and she smoked 62 off 48 balls, ensuring that there would be no dramas in the run-chase.
Captain Suzie Bates has also had some solid contributions, hitting 36 in the first ODI and 33 in the second. Amy Satterthwaite has done the same; 20 and 25. In both games, Aotearoa's top-three has scored 20+ runs each although Bates and Satterthwaite probably won't be too happy with getting dismissed after doing the hard work.
