NZC Wants To Kill Test Cricket?

England are currently knee-deep in a Test series against South Africa consisting of four Tests. They will then host West Indies for three Tests before venturing over to Australia for the Ashes, which consists of five Tests.

Sri Lanka are currently hosting India for three Tests and South Africa are scheduled to play four Tests against Australia early next year, after welcoming Bangladesh for a couple Tests.

Guess how many Tests we will be treated to in Aotearoa this summer? Four, just four.

We will have the same number of Tests in Aotearoa this summer as the England vs South Africa series, or the South Africa vs Australia series. There will be fewer Tests in Aotearoa this summer than the Ashes. I dunno about y'all but that's kinda disgusting.

New Zealand Cricket dropped their schedule for this summer and their diet of limited-overs cricket continues. The best way to describe this is eating a diet of fast food and sugar, compared to a wholesome diet of what Mother Nature has graced us with; there's immediate mouth pleasure in a fast food/sugar diet but there's no long-term benefit.  NZC has made their position clear in being slaves to cash, being slaves to the immediate pleasure that limited-overs cricket provides while they ignore the push from other nations to pump up Test cricket.

You will be told that NZC is following an international trend, yet other nations are playing Test series consisting of more than two Tests. Most of the Test cricket world has found a nice balance of enjoying limited-overs cricket and giving people (and players) what they want which is Test cricket. NZC believes they don't need to place an emphasis on Test cricket, which is odd given how other nations are going about scheduling Test series'.

You will also be told that NZC is doing their bit for Test cricket by *trying* to schedule a day/night Test at Eden Park. They still need to jump through a few hoops to have that day/night Test confirmed, either way there's not really a need for NZC to go out of their way in chasing cash by trying so hard to have a day/night Test when I'm seeing healthy crowds at the beautiful cricket grounds around Aotearoa.

All I see when I watch a Test on telly that's being played in Dunedin, Christchurch, Hamilton or Wellington is crowds of people loving life on grass banks. I definitely don't see sparsely populated grass banks, I barely see grass banks because people are out there enjoying Test cricket, normal 11am-6pm Test cricket. Test cricket is not on a death-bed in Aotearoa, people love themselves some Test cricket and so the desperation to have a day/night Test is yuck.

And as an Aucklander; it's yuck, let alone having it at Eden Park which in no way, shape or form represents Aotearoa as a cricketing nation.

Perhaps NZC are incredibly out of touch with kiwi cricket fans? It definitely sounds as though they are out of touch with the world of cricket, which judges players on what they do in Test cricket. Sure, you can score runs or bowl nicely in coloured clothing, but Kane Williamson is already a legend and will be our greatest ever batsman based largely on his Test career. In that regard, NZC is letting the players down as they don't have the same opportunities in Test cricket as other nations.

Winning Tests is what cricket is all about, players will tell you that there's no better feeling than sitting in the sheds after a win with your comrades. NZC is effectively taking those opportunities away from our nation's best cricketers.

There will be more T20 games this summer that Tests, nine (maybe 10) T20s vs four Tests. If any format of cricket is in danger, it is international T20 cricket, which holds little relevance in the wonderful world of franchise T20 cricket tournaments. If anything will make way to open up a window for a bunch of T20 tournaments, it will be international T20 cricket and here we are, placing an emphasis on international T20 cricket.

Do I care what anyone does in an international T20 game? No, I barely care who gets selected as it is barely a representation of which cricketers are Aotearoa's best.

Maybe this is because NZC's domestic T20 competition is a bit of a failure and this is their only way to cash in on T20 cricket's rise. That flows into the lack of desire from NZC to support kiwi cricketers in the Big Bash League and instead of easing up on the international T20 games to open up a window for kiwis to take part in the BBL, NZC has six T20s and eight ODIs during the BBL. Of course, letting players head over to the BBL doesn't give NZC any dosh so why would they let that happen.

I love Test cricket, I love all cricket and the reason I'm so frustrated is because there is no balance. It'll be interesting to see what you guys think, so if you love Test cricket, make it known and leave a comment on Facebook, or like or share this.

Y'all have been here reading how messed up selections were over the summer, reading about the complete lack of logic or common sense when it came to our Blackcaps. And the Blackcaps kinda sucked as a result of that. They say it all starts at the top and it looks as though the current NZC regime is leading kiwi cricket down the wrong path, chasing quick cash instead of serving kiwi cricket's best interests.
