Domestic Cricket Daily: Super Smash #11 (Pre-Finals All Stars)

Never.

Two weeks ago I dropped a Super Smash All Stars team and now, with the three finalists sussed, I'm going back to tinker with my selections. There may be further tinkering as I place a hefty weight on those who can perform when it matters most and a few impressive performances in finals cricket could boost a player's stocks.

Here's the team I selected previously:

Tim Seifert (wk), George Worker, Jesse Ryder, Will Young, Mark Chapman, Anton Devcich, Josh Clarkson, Andrew Ellis, Anurag Verma, Blair Tickner, Tarun Nethula.

And after a a few T20 nightmares last night as various players haunted me in pursuit of selection this time around, here's my updated Super Smash All Stars:

Tim Seifert, George Worker, Jesse Ryder, Will Young, Mark Chapman, Tom Bruce, Cameron Fletcher (wk), Anton Devcich, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Ben Lister.

In: Tom Bruce, Cameron Fletcher, Ish Sodhi, Ben Lister.

Out: Josh Clarkson, Andrew Ellis, Anurag Verma, Tarun Nethula.

The top-five is exactly the same because these lads are still the best in the business and the three younger lads are the three leading run-scorers; Young (1st), Chapman, Seifert. They are the only batsmen who have scored over 300 runs and having played more games since January 4th (Young's played 4, Chapman's played 3 and Seifert's played 2), Young is the big mover and shaker here.

All three of these lads have scored single-digits in just 2inns of the Super Smash and keep in mind that their averages (all in mid 30s) are slightly lower than others because none of them have a not-out. If you were to solely look at averages, you wouldn't pick these three as being super dominant but they have been exactly that and the higher averages go to those finishers in the middle order.

George Worker and Jesse Ryder are fairly automatic selections in most of my domestic All Star teams, not just because of my bias towards them but they continue to score runs for shit's and giggles in all formats. Ryder is 7th in runs with 155.21sr and he's also yet to finish not-out, so his average of 31.62 is very solid considering Central Districts can bank on Ryder hitting 30ish most innings, rather quickly.

With only 4innns, Worker doesn't have the volume of runs, yet he's still hit 162 runs @ 40.50avg/180sr and in keeping with this not-out vibe; Worker also lacks a not-out and is averaging 40, omg. There's also the fact that Worker has the highest strike-rate of any batsman with more runs than him and no one else is really that close with Luke Ronchi (174sr) and Chapman (175sr) the next best.

Tom Bruce and Cameron Fletcher have earned a call up through their dominance, replacing Josh Clarkson and Andrew Ellis, while also pushing Anton Devcich down the order. Devcich is a top-five runs/wickets player, so he's automatic but the form of Bruce and Fletcher has been monstrous in recent games, enough to make me roll with their runs over Ellis' fantastic seamers (13w @ 15.69avg/8.44rpo).

It's all about what have you done for me lately with Bruce as he only put up scores of 20, 9 and 12 in 3inns prior to joining the Blackcaps Battlers. For the Battlers he hit 2, 3 and 23 before a 7 on return to CD and he's heading into the finals in sizzling form; 42, 59 and 46. All of that's coming with a strike-rate of 168.10.

Fletcher was very solid up until January 4th, not quite able to force other blokes out of the All Stars though. With scores of 26, 46 and 32* since then, an overall strike-rate of 152.77 and 5 not-outs in 9inns, I had to find a way in for Fletcher and depending on who wakes up on the right side of the wicket-keeping bed; he and Seifert can share the wicket-keeping gloves.

Once I settled on selecting a finisher batsman instead of a bowler in this spot, it came down to Fletcher, Rob O'Donnell and Daryl Mitchell. O'Donnell's got the better not-out record but has a lower strike-rate of 131.84 and Mitchell's bowling didn't demand all-rounder selection, nor has his batting been on Fletcher's level. O'Donnell and Mitchell definitely deserve some lovin' and the same goes for Ellis, they were unluggy uce to miss out.

There are enough job-doing bowlers in the batting group for me to stack this team with a deep batting line up. Worker, Ryder and Chapman are all capable of dipping in with an over or two when needed and youz know I low key love Bruce's offies (3w in 6ov @ 7.83rpo!) - I have four bowlers who will definitely bowl their 4ov, leaving me with four tweakers to fill the other 4ov.

Blair Tickner is the leading wicket-taker and by some margin with 18w @ 15.94avg/8.20rpo, while Ben Lister joins Ellis in next-best with 13w. Tickner has kept on truckin' with his work up until January 4th, so there's no real drama in swiftly picking him again and after a slightly inconsistent start, Lister has settled into a wicket-taking groove.

Lister has been impressive all summer and started with a 4inns stretch in which he took 0w, 3, 0 and 3. New year, new me and Lister has taken a wicket in each of the next 4inns, taking 2w in 3 of the 4inns and he is the only seamer in the top-10 wicket-takers to conceded less than 8rpo.

I would happily listen to a case for Seth Rance's selection over Lister (10w @ 17.10avg/8.55rpo). I just prefer rocking with Lister.

Ish Sodhi gets the nod ahead of Tarun Nethula, with Cole McConchie deserving a shout out as well given that he's the leading spinner (11w @ 15avg/7.85rpo) and I'm going to be super intrigued to see how Roneel Hira performs for Auckland in their coming game/s. Hira has re-emerged from the abyss to play 5 games for Auckland and he's taken 9w @ 13.77/6.52, which is the best record of all spinners, I just like me a juicy sample size and players who have done the job over a longer period.

Hira can definitely storm into the All Stars if he can contribute to Auckland making the final and then replicate it again in the final, don't sleep on Hira's return.

Sodhi has 10w @ 16.80avg/7.30rpo and he's on a 3inns streak of 2w (including the last T20I vs West Indies), plus he has taken a wicket in every Super Smash game thus far. It's only right to selected the #1 T20I bowler in the world, but remember that those T20I rankings don't include freaky bowlers only playing franchise T20 tournaments around the world and Sodhi's Super Smash dominance.

Peace and love 27.
