2020/21 Kiwi-WBBL #1
The Women's Big Bash League started with plenty of rain last weekend and unfortunately, the team who managed to get through their two game was Adelaide Strikers and Suzie Bates is still out nursing an injury. That means no Bates in those two games and everything's a bit all over the place from that opening weekend, which sets up this weekend and the following week nicely as there will be plenty of games to suss out.
No Bates for the Strikers and that opened up space for veteran White Fern Katie Perkins to be called up from the group of kiwis who are operating as replacement players. Perkins didn't bat in the Strikers first 9-over loss to Sydney Sixers as she was listed to bat #9 and that serves up a funky scenario in which Perkins is apparently a lower-order T20 batswoman; Perkins was listed or batted #8 and #9 in the White Ferns vs Australia T20I series and is now in that same spot as a replacement player for Adelaide.
Perkins didn't play in the Strikers next game, a loss to Hobart Hurricanes where Rachel Priest opened the batting ... and got a first-ball duck. That was Priest's only action in the opening stanza and the final game that was played saw Sophie Devine's Perth Scorchers up against Brisbane Heat's Amelia Kerr and Maddy Green.
Batting first, Devine hit 26 @ 96.29s to nudge the Scorchers up to 132/7 and Devine was Kerr's lone wicket of this game. Kerr finished with 1w @ 5.25rpo and after picking up a bunch of overs in the T20I and Rose Bowl series, Green's offies weren't required by Brisbane; expect Green to bowl at some point.
Green is opening the batting for Brisbane and she managed 6 off 9 in her first outing, while Kerr wasn't required with the Heat chasing down their target with 3 overs to spare. Devine opened the bowling for Perth and didn't take a wicket, conceding 7.66rpo.
Looking forward to this weekend's games, all eight teams will play on Saturday and Sunday which will give us four games on either day. Then there will be another round of games mid-week and more cricket to enjoy. As it stands, with a horrible sample size, Kerr's the best kiwi bowler so far and Devine's knock has her as the best kiwi run-scorer.
