2022/23 Super Smash: Update #1

Canterbury and Wellington started the blokes Super Smash with wins over Northern and Otago respectively. Northern batted first in a 14-over extravaganza, scoring 96/5 before Chad Bowes led Canterbury's run-chase with 57* @ 146.15sr. Canterbury reached their target just one wicket down.

Bowes started slowly this summer and then scored a century in his last Plunket Shield game, as well as back to back 80-odds in Ford Trophy. This is his fourth 50+ score of the summer and when in T20 mode, Bowes opens the innings with a strike-rate of 136.

Henry Shipley appeared to pick up a niggle as well as taking 2w @ 2.5rpo. Remember that Shipley took 18w @ 14.11avg/7.25rpo last summer and has a T20 career record of 22.16avg/7.91rpo. Shipley has taken wickets in eight consecutive innings this summer.

Wellington batted first against Otago with Rachin Ravindra's 67 @ 148.88sr taking them to 152/8. Michael Rae took 3w @ 6.5rpo for Otago along with Dean Foxcroft's 2w @ 3.5rpo. Foxcroft then led the Otago run-chase with 73 runs @ 128sr and despite a flourish from Llew Johnson batting down the order (24 runs @ 200sr), Otago ran out of juice to put up 144/7 in reply.

Adam Milne took 2w @ 6rpo and Logan van Beek took 2w @ 7.75rpo. Milne has wickets in his last four games, three of which were for Blackcaps against India. After a tricky T20 WC in which he took 3w @ 41.66avg/7.65rpo for Netherlands, van Beek has settled back into the Aotearoa flow with wickets in all eight games he's played since.
