2022/23 HBJ Shield: Maddy Green's Ascension, Amy Satterthwaite Bows Out and More

Women's domestic cricket honours are shared between Wellington and Canterbury this summer after Wellington won the HBJ Shield final. Canterbury couldn't do the double in Amy Satterthwaite's last hoorah although Satterthwaite scored 66 in the final and led the Canterbury fight back.

Satterthwaite scored the most runs for Canterbury in HBJ Shield and was second to Kate Anderson in Super Smash. Satterthwaite averaged 81.2 in HBJ Shield and 53.71 in Super Smash this summer which reflects Satterthwaite's mana as an Aotearoa cricketing legend. Satterthwaite finishes her career with a List-A average of 41.47 and T20 average of 29.35.

As Satterthwaite bowed out of White Ferns cricket, Maddy Green found a groove. Green scored 106 @ 100sr in the final to set up the win for Wellington and this knock is a culmination of an intriguing career arc. Since emerging with the White Ferns in 2012, Green didn't stack up runs even though her talent was obvious.

This is most evident in Green's ODI average of 23.67 and T20I average of 16. Green scored the same number of ODI centuries last year (three) as she did in eight consecutive years prior. Then Green whacked 60 runs @ 143sr in the T20 World Cup. Green finished T20 innings for the White Ferns recently, then led Wellington's innings in the HBJ Shield final.

Green also bowled 3ov @ 7rpo in this final, after spending time as a wicket-keeper for White Ferns earlier in the summer. Green is an excellent fielder and well, check out some of the strokes from this HBJ Shield knock...

Gabby Sullivan and Leigh Kasperek also put up performances that fit snug into wider trends. Sullivan took 4w @ 5.4rpo in the final and currently averages below 23 in both formats. Here's her summer mahi...

  • HBJ Shield: 21w @ 15avg/3.87rpo

  • Super Smash: 21w @ 12.38avg/5.88rpo

Kasperek took the most wickets for Wellington in both formats as well, while averaging 20+ with the bat in both formats. Kasperek scored two half-centuries in HBJ Shield and had a Super Smash strike-rate of 110.

Kasperek now averages 20.03 in List-A and 15.52 in T20. Since the start of 2018, Kasperek is second for White Ferns ODI wickets and third for T20I wickets. That's funky because Kasperek hasn't played since September 2021.

Here are some more notes...

Jess McFadyen scored 53 in the final for Wellington and she has averaged 40+ in five consecutive seasons.

Jacinta Savage scored 58* @ 107sr and along with Lea Tahuhu’s 31 runs @ 141sr they almost snared a win for Canterbury late in the run-chase. Savage only played five Super Smash games, barely bowled and batted twice. Savage played seven HBJ Shield games with scores of 19, 18, 32 and 58* in the final stretch.
