Free Man Hockey: Azlan Shah Cup Update #1

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hasn't quite started as the Black Sticks Men would have liked and they are now delicately poised with games against Japan (tonight) and Malaysia (Wednesday) to come. Coming up against their former coach Colin Batch, the kiwis managed a 1-1 draw against Australia thanks to a Dominic Newman goal, but they were then touched up by India 3-0.

Australia and India currently sit in the top three along with Great Britain, so there's an opportunity for the Black Sticks to get back on track with wins over the two teams who join them in the bottom three. Here's all the Black Sticks related bits and bobs I could find via the wonderful interweb from Malaysia...

Kevin Marr, manager of the Blacksticks steps in to talk to the media prior to the start of the tournament tomorrow (Saturday 29th)
World number 2 Australia drew withNew Zealand 1-1 today. The kookaburras controlled most of the game but still came up short where it mattered. This is a huge result for a depleted Blacksticks side and a very valuable point for them going into day 2.

A relatively easy win for India over New Zealand today. The final score 3-0 could easily have been higher but for the missed chances created by India. Still, Coach Oltmans for India was happy enough with the result.

Here's some other bits and bobs from the rest of the Azlan Shah Cup so far, as well as hockey funk from around the world...

After a 2 hour delay due to storms the teams finally took the field in the opening match of the SAS Cup in Ipoh today. India on the rise face d a full GB squad on what was always going to be a thriller.
Host nation faced off against Japan in the final game on day 1. The 10 pm start was very late due to bad storms in the area. Malaysia should have finished Japan early but just failed to convert when it mattered most.
Australia walked all over Malaysia today in a 6-1 drubbing. Malaysia never really got into the game. They had a goal dis-allowed and also lost 2 players at the same time to reduce the team to 9 players for a while. Australia pounced and tkho full advantage of the situation.
GB played Japan today in an entertaining game that was fast and skilful. The Japan men defended for large pats of the game, which is normal the n facing a higher ranked opponent. Still, Japan managed to convert 3 times with their fast paced forwards which created good chances.
