Big K.R.I.T - Cadillactica

The planet Cadillactica was created within the history of the big bang, or what we like to call the 808. Now we are privileged to experience something sonically never heard before. Wait wait, it's starting Life

Big K.R.I.T has been on the scene for a while now, churning out hip hop that rocks with bass and represents the South perfectly. KRIT is the king of the south, no discussion. He's someone who is equally at home spitting some poetry whether it reflects on society or females as he is cooking up something that should only be played rollin' down a Mississippi street in a Cadillac with some massive speakers in your trunk. Unfortunately, I'm not that lucky so I couldn't quite enjoy Cadillactica as I would have liked, but enjoy it I definitely did.

KRIT is behind the boards for most of the album, producing a sound that obviously has a whole lot of bass but also some nifty subtle sounds. To be honest, KRIT shines on the boards by not only mastering the sound that he wants but also mastering the creation of a song. Prime examples of this are 'Life' and 'Saturdays = Celebration' which are layered with sounds that build towards a climax, as you'd expect from a film. It's hard not to feel hyphy when a song builds in tempo from point A to point C.

I usually blurt out a couple of thoughts about most of the songs, but the joy of Cadillactica is that it's a pure album. It's been created with a theme in mind, with a purpose and everything has its place. According to KRIT, 'Caddilactica' is a planet and the whole album sonically resembles outer space, but throw in some classic southern hip hop and you get near perfection.

Grandma's hands used to usher Sunday mornings
Now before Sunday school, I hustle and I'm on it
I can't slow down, nah, a dollar and a dream
In this life you live, you're either the dealer or the fiend -
Soul Food

There's a few jams that focus on the opposite genre - 'Third Eye', 'Pay Attention' and 'Do You Love Me' but it's the way that KRIT delivers these tunes that makes him awesome. 'Third Eye' see's KRIT humming the chorus - "My two eyes saw your third eye, from across the room. I can see your soul babe, I think you're my soul mate" which has a clear deeper meaning while 'Pay Attention' is more just keeping it G in the strip club but with some usual KRIT sensibility. The true mark of KRIT however is how in 'Do You Love Me' he uses a car as a metaphor for a female. He keeps it up through the whole song leaving you curious if he's actually deeply in love with his ride, which he obviously is.

The mix of Cadillac admiration, southern awesomeness, some social perspective and all round keeping it G means that you're never really wanting more. When (I mean if, it's hard to get tired of any of the themes/sounds) you get tired of hearing about a fictional planet named after the Cadillac you can hear KRIT channel is inner UGK and spit some smooth, crips rhymes on 'Mo Better Cool' (along with Bun B + Devin The Dude and Big Sant). KRIT genuinely adopts a similar flow to that of Bun B and Pimp C - pour the 40 and smoke one for the Pimp.Otherwise you can jam 'Soul Food' which features Raphael Saadiq. 'Soul Food' had me thinking I was a superstar, singing everywhere I went.

Other features include E-40 and Wiz Khalifa on 'Mind Control' with each of the 3 rappers doing their thing, they don't alter their style to fit the mould. There's also 'Lost Generation' which has assistance from Lupe Fiasco. Lupe just doesn't really impress anymore, his rhymes just don't give me a stiffy however KRIT's verse on this on definitely does give me a stiffy. Speaking of stifffies and I'm sorry for extending the stiffy thing but 'Lac lac lac' with A$AP Ferg is full of funk and Ferg is awesome.

My Bang Up Banger for Cadillactica is Mt Olympus, which has a video KRIT released a few months ago. KRIT absolutely flexes his muscle here and delivers evidence as to his standing in hip hop. He basically shits on the majority of the bum as rappers that exist, I like.

What is it? Funk is a favourite word here at the Niche Cache, but funk is the only way to describe it. It's a creative mixture of sounds with foundations in that classic Southern bass. It's freakish funk, there ya go. Freakish because KRIT does it all -  makes the beats, the sound that involves everything from flutes to synths, he basically raps/sings/hums the hooks and delivers fire.
