Wu Tang Might Be Forever

Ok, Wu Tang will be forever. Let's get that straight from the get go. Nobody is messing with the legacy that the Wu Tang Clan have created since they burst on to the scene in 1992 with 'Protect Ya Neck'. I was the grand old age of one. I hadn't even learnt about South Auckland, let alone Staten Island. It's a weird time for Wu Tang fans though. Plenty of water has gushed and slowly flowed under the bridge and time has changed many things around and within one of the greatest musical groups to ever exist.

The next offering/s from the Wu Tang Clan will probably be their last. Let's be honest, RZA is 44 and most of the crew are in to their 40's ... as is the case with many of the golden generation. There are bigger fish to fry than writing raps when you're 40+. In the coming months we are going to be graced with a project which could very well be one of the most awesome creative things of the modern era - The Wu, Once upon a time in Shaolin. This is an album that will only exist in the hands of one person or as RZA has claimed, in a museum. Only one copy of this album will be produced. Yes, you heard right ... while you might be able to get your hands on a digital download, there will be only one. While many of us will nod our heads and sing along to the tunes of the album, we'll forever be jealous of the bugger who gets his hands on it ... the bugger who has a cool couple mill to splash on a piece of history.

There will also be A Better Tomorrow which will be the album for the consumer. A regular joe blow album that will be available as a hard copy and as a download (legally and illegally).

As someone who lists the Wu Tang Clan as one of his top 5 or so hip hop acts ever (Wu, Nas, Outkast, Biggie, Jay-Z/Snoop Dogg), you'd imagine that I'm pretty excited right?! Well kind of. You see things are rarely daisies and ice-cream with the Wu Tang Clan ... as you would expect with a group of 10 odd grown men all doing grown men shit.

All you have to do is watch 'Rock the Bells' to understand the group dynamic and this was before the sad passing of Old Dirty Bastard, RIP mate.

The current climate includes creative differences between Raekwon and RZA with Raekwon not too keen to chipping in on Wu Tang duties while he gets his own Rae will apparently feature on Once upon a time in Shaolin but not on A Better Tomorrow). Raekwon and Ghostface Killah are boys so if the Chef isn't partaking much the Ghostface won't be. Interestingly Method Man has apparently been putting in work (despite teaming up with Rae and Ghost many times) and general buy in from the rest of the crew. U-God is keen despite some former disputes with RZA and the likes of Masta Killa and Cappadonna are in. GZA has been doing TED talks so who knows how much he'll be involved and Inspectah Deck won't feature a hell of a lot either.

So who knows what to expect. Whether we get the lethal chemistry and competition that fueled some of the best verses ever written, whether we get the gritty, grimey sound that is the Wu Tang Clan. I dunno. I dunno whether I'm excited or whether I'll listen to it once and go back to singing along to Enter the Wu Tang.

At the head of this all is RZA. The man who brought together a bunch of MC's, the man with the master plan, the man who made Wu Tang not only one of the greatest hip hop groups of all time but the man who made them one of the biggest brands around as well. He's the man who is at the heart of them continuing to put out music, 20 years later.

He is also the man at the heart of many of the conflicts within the Clan. My personal fav is Method Man and he appears relatively neutral in everything so I don't really have a side. Whether it's some team members not buying in to his vision, or whether his vision is simply wrong or an unlikely target ... who knows.

All I know is that in the near future there will be two new thingy ma jigs from the Wu Tang Clan. One could possibly go down as one of the most awesome things ever, the other could serve as a reminder to the younger folk to protect their necks OR something for us Wu fans to saviour.

Wu Tang is definitely forever.
