Action Bronson - Mr Wonderful

I feel for the Wildcard in a way, he's had to put up with my music blaring out of our boombox over the past few weeks as three of my favourite rappers dropped albums. I don't feel for him in the sense that he's had to listen to this music, but because he's had no choice and this period of hip hop bliss was capped off with Action Bronson's Mr Wonderful.

If you ain't know, Bronson was a chef, now a rapper and one of the very best in the game right now. Ever since he switched up the career path and started rapping seriously, which was about five or six years ago, he's been serving up mixtapes on a consistent basis. That means that nearly every six months in recent years we've been treated to hard hitting food referencing-back flipping-grimey-yet-funny New York raps, there's nothing better.

While some rappers, like Earl Sweatshirt came into the game very early and their musical progression follows a bit of a maturing process, Bronson already knew his niche. However, as Mr Wonderful is his first major album release, it is a bit different as he explores his creativity with some funky singing and a wide range of production to spit fire all over.

As Bronson's been one of my fav's for a few years now, I'm gonna take the new fan angle. My mate Jase played Mr Wonderful while we were sitting in his garage hitting the bucky and it was my first time being graced by Bronsilino, type of angle...

The most striking aspect of Mr Wonderful is how fucking entertaining it is. With his extensive vocabulary and intricate knowledge of New York life, you're treated to a range of adventures throughout the album. The album makes you laugh as Bronson has no filter, as should any artist and he's able to vividly paint pictures. Sure, some of those pictures and stories have been told by other rappers, like enjoying the company of a female, but no one in this rap business can describe it like Bronson.

"Laid by the pool, my legs gettin' massaged by a professional
Strictly business, nothin' sexual
Seasonal vegetables lookin' exceptional
You ain't think I was hot then, now you wanna hum on my testicles"
The Rising

As a body of work, Mr Wonderful is tight ... not as in 'oh that shit's tight' but tight as in all the content fits perfectly and works towards an end goal. You're taking on a journey, as I said, it's an entertaining journey which is summed up by the first three songs. 'Brand New Car' is about as funky introduction as you're going to get, serving not only as a great introduction to the album with Bronson crooning over some Billy Joel sampled production but also as an introduction to Bronson himself for those new listeners.

'The Rising' let's you know that Bronson's here to fuck shit up, while 'Terry' is more from the point of view of Bronson in the midst of fucking shit up.

"Tryna do the remix with Pitbull
Tell the pilot land at Schiphol
Play the violin with dimples
Life's ironic and it's simple
Smoke good, fuck, eat, drink
Drive nice car, wear all green mink"
Terry

The rest of the album has Bronson exploring a range of topics, whether they be just raw bars or love, he does it to near perfection. But to be honest, it doesn't really matter what Bronson raps about because it's fire regardless, his ability on the mic gives him opportunities that other rappers simply don't have. As he can draw on a variety of food, geographical and pop culture references, he can basically package his bars any way he pleases without it becoming tiresome.

Behind the boards, Bronson has input from his usual cast of producers who combine elements of New York boom bap with pure funk. Bronson's worked a lot with the likes of The Alchemist, Party Supplies, Statik Selektah and Mark Ronson who can offer the signature Bronson sound but we're also blessed with OVO's 40 and OVO collaborator Omen on 'Actin Crazy'. While having a variety of producers on an album can lead to a lack of cohesion, Mr Wonderful, rather majestically walks a tightrope of variety and an overall sound. No song sounds similar to another, but they all have a vibe that you know Bronson would love.

In terms of features, Bronson draws on New York spitter Mayhem Lauren, Chance the Rapper and Party Supplies to offer up vocals. They all do their jobs perfectly with Mayhem's gritty New York style suited to 'Falconry' while Chance the Rapper's unique quasi-rapping does a great job in topping off 'Baby Blue'. And as usual, Big Body Bes drops some gems. He's definitely the best ad-lib dude in hip hop right now.

'Easy Rider' closes the album with Bronson riding off into the sunset after leaving a trail of destruction after fucking shit up. You're left wondering what adventures Bronson will be on next, what inspiration he will draw on and how he's going to serve it up because he's shown with Mr Wonderful that he's able to grow creatively yet use that growth to enhance his music.

My Bang Up Banger is 'Falconry'. It's just Bronson at his best.

What is it? It's Action Bronson at his best, which is pork belly to all these other rapper's baked beans.
