Logic - Bobby Tarantino
Scene
Over the past few years Logic has graced us with two high-calibre albums. Both 'Under Pressure' and 'The Incredible True Story' nailed everything that we love about albums and showcased Logic's ability on the mic, along with his ability to build a narrative in a collection of songs. Logic had dropped two albums that established him as a potent force in hip hop and did that so a manner that only filled his fans with good vibes, giving him one of the most loyal fanbases in the music business.
Those albums were deep and you could tell that a heck of a lot of thought and effort went into them, so it was a bit or a surprise that 'Bobby Tarantino' dropped earlier this month without much hype leading up to its release. That's because it's different, it still has many layers to it and Logic certainly doesn't take a step backwards, it's just a bit different. Simply put, 'Bobby Tarantino' is Logic just spitting fire on a variety of different beats.
Songs
- Illuminatro: Google the rewinded version.
- Flexicution: Flexing, beauty of a beat.
- The Jam: Riding the beat with bars, peep the bars.
- Slave II: Slave to the game 'angrier than Kanye when he's talking about clothes, that's a fashion line'.
- A Word From Our Sponsors: Cheeky interlude, spitting facts.
- Wrist ft. Pusha T: Coke raps, but a wee bit more.
- Super Mario World: Perky, hard raps and still perky.
- Studio Ambience At Night: Malibu: Sneak peak at a new jam.
- 44 Bars: Still a success despite people not buying music.
- Slave: Slave to the race.
- Deeper Than Money: Groovy Logic, immense vibes.
Vibe
The term 'filler' has negative connotations that come with it, however the filler vibe of 'Bobby Tarantino' is different to me. It's a filler in that it bridges the gap between albums and gives fans more music to enjoy while Logic, keeping Logic at the forefront of his fans' minds and at the forefront of a cluttered hip hop industry.
It's a highly fun mixtape as well so that adds to the overall vibe. Some would also view this 'fun' aspect as a negative as Logic tends to dish up dizzying word-play at his trademark tempo, however I love this as it's more easy to digest that the albums which need to be given time to really sink in. 'Bobby Tarantino' has Logic still operating at a high level and making quality music, it's just easier to immediately enjoy this mixtape and it kinda shows that Logic can dish up an intensely complex album, as well as something that just gets you noddin' ya head.
Music
The production credits feature Logic and his longtime collaborater 6ix, just them. Logic handles himself nicely on the boards and refers to his production process in 'Deeper Than Money' so while I couldn't quite find which song was produced by who, we can definitely assume that Logic played a major role in the production.
Logic and 6ix flex their production muscles as they provide a variety of different sounds, keeping the mixtape fresh as each song takes you down a different path. 'Deeper Than Money' can only be described as funky or groovy and has Logic rapping over production that we've never really heard from him before. 'Wrist' is hard-hitting and generally chaotic, borderline scary while '44 Bars' is more simple, minimalistic. There's variety, which has me excited about what Logic and 6ix could serve up in the future.
Pusha T is the only feature and he chimes in, offering a different perspective to Logic on slanging cocaine. It's an interesting song to dive into and that there's many layers to this song despite 'Bobby Tarantino' not quite having the depth of Logic's albums, only shows what we are working with here.
Jump up on that MPC, like a boss MVP
Cook up shit that make other producers wanna envy me
Master it then set it free, turn it into MP3s
Spin that shit up in Serato, I can feel the energy 'Deeper Than Money'
Yeah, it's that Flexicution, I want retribution
Ya'll gone fuck around and make me wake up lucid
And I don't think ya'll ready for the revolution
Boy your shit is pollution, Logic got the solution
Motherfuckers used to hate us
Now they sayin' that they made us
Everyone know I'm the greatest 'Super Mario World'
Living as a black man, in the skin of the white man
Everybody wanna fight man, and I put it on my right hand
Goddamn, it's all for this
I just wanna make the world a better place
Fuck race and the shade in my face
Looking for the sun but the shade in my face
Best in my field, I'm a slave to the race
Black motherfucker, white motherfucker
I don't give a damn what you is, can you write motherfucker?
Said I couldn't do it, said I wouldn't do it
I just made a million in a month, aight motherfucker?
I did everything I said I'd ever do and to you I still ain't shit?
Alright motherfucker 'Slave'
Finale
'Bobby Tarantino' did its job perfectly as I'm now awaiting another drop from Logic and he's just given everyone a taster of what we now expect from him. There's not the depth or layers in this mixtape, compared to his albums but there's still enough to really sink your teeth into and there's rewind value or reason to listen to each song numerous times as you've either got check what Logic said or you just wanna vibe out again.
Not to mention that Logic still serves an intro that you've gotta rewind to comprehend, an interlude that explains the weird relationship between an artist and fans along with a little teaser of some new music, plus a new wave of content from his life over the past six months; there's no shortage of pure Logic creativity to enjoy in 'Bobby Tarantino'
