Storm Warning

Craig Bellamy has long been known as the bloke who can take a journeyman and turn him in to a premiership winning player. Think of guys like Brian Norrie, Todd Lawrie, Ryan Hinchcliffe, etc. There are plenty of blokes whose careers have been at a crossroads and the Storm have picked them up, put them in their system and watched them flourish. This has a lot to do with Bellamy's coaching ability but also with the fact that these guys are in the same team as three of the greatest rugby league players ever. With age catching up to many of these players, what's next? I'm predicting a cold front. A sweeping cloud of shit weather, commonly known as a Storm. It's coming and here's why.

To say that the Storm don't have the best roster is unfair. I think it's more the fact that other rosters are much better, especially those who are competing with the Storm near the top of the table. Let's face it, they have the big three and that gets them by. This is why they won't win the Premiership this season. They will win many more premierships in the upcoming years however, that's for sure. Let's look at the guys who are now established first graders and have a bright future ahead of them.

We'll start with the outside backs who have been doing a fine job in the purple jersey. Will Chambers has emerged as one of the best centres going around while Justin O'Neil is a prototype Craig Bellamy winger. Having these two in your back line ensures that mistakes are kept to a minimal, and attacks can start from anywhere when the ball is in their hands. Keep in mind that Matt Duffie has been out injured all season as well and should be back next year.  Throw in Victorian youngster Mahe Fonua and you have a group of outside backs who are all young and very talented.

The forwards are also in a healthy state with plenty of young back rowers gaining NRL experience. Kevin Proctor is good every game, offering a skillful but physical style that can create plenty of opportunities. Fresh faces such as Tohu Harris and Kenneth Bromwich have also been doing a fine job. Harris has had more game time and is a star of the future. He's filled in at centre a couple of times this season and did a pretty fine job. K. Bromwich isn't quite as big as his brother Jesse, but he still loves to mix it up and has the footwork to keep defences guessing. Slade Griffin has also done a fine job with the limited opportunities he's had this year, most notably during Origin. He's a Ryan Hinchcliffe replica and will hold down the middle of the field with the sort of effort and smarts that impresses Sir Bellyache.

The last of the young crop who have been doing their bit, are the props. Jesse Bromwich is an international prop... 'nuff said. He's very similar to James Tamou in that they are both huge and have great footwork, allowing them to get in between tacklers and ensuring a quick play the ball. Throw into the mix Jordan McClean who has been given his shot during the latter part of the season. He has a very bright future and is an important piece of the Storm puzzle. Two other young props to be given a shot this year were Mitch Garbutt and Tim Glasby - which is important when you consider that Jason Ryles is retiring, Bryan Norrie is in the twilight of his career and role players such as Siosaia Vave are just that: role players. The more props they have who have been brought through the Storm system, the better.

If you watched the Storm during the Origin period, you would have witnessed the talents of Ben Hampton. Hampton is someone who will provide Storm fans with copious amounts of joy, the same way Billy Slater has. The kid doesn't know what fear is. He's quick and nimble, as well has possessing the skills and smarts necessary to play in the halves (he debuted at full back). Hampton will enjoy the benefits of learning from the big 3 combining his natural talents with the wise minds of Smith, Slater and Cronk.

The Storm have added a couple of young players to their roster for next season too, most notably Cody Walker who has been shining in the Queensland Cup earning the 'Best and Fairest' title with the Storm's feeder team in Brisbane: East Tigers. Walker plays in the 6 jersey and could easily fill Gareth Widdop's boots next season. Check out some of his work here, he's the 6 for the orange team scoring lots of tries and stuff:

Another little known addition is fullback Cameron Munster who has also been playing in the Queensland Cup for the Central Queensland Capras and is the 2013 Qld Cup Rookie of the Year. The kid has skills and was caught up in a bidding war between the Broncos, Bulldogs and the Storm with the Storm winning out. He's only 19 and has been doing a fine job in Queensland, finishing 4th in the polling for Player of the Year honours... which Cody Walker won. Munster is your typical fullback, lean and quick and is a very talented ball runner:

Here's some more of his highlights - move over Billy Slater:

Here's my Melbourne Storm starting 13 in a couple of years. I suspect that the big three may still be around, but this shows how good they could be in the future. Keep in mind that they're obviously gonna buy a few blokes as well.
