The Rabbitohs Cast - The Front Row
While elsewhere in the Rabbitohs squad there were players who are the very best in the NRL, the Bunnies front was a bit weird. Obviously George Burgess emerged as one of the best props in the NRL, but his propping partner Dave Tyrell could walk through Sydney without a whisper (besides in Redfern). One could argue that these two were the foundation, they were the concrete blocks from which the Rabbitohs success was built upon, they dominated pretty much every team they came across and ensured that the dirty stuff was taken care of. I'm going to include the hookers in this segment, hookers plural ;)
George Burgess - Do you know what's freaky? I've developed an opinion that George is more explosive that Sam, he's more athletic, he doesn't have the endurance and sheer toughness but he's an absolute beast. I mean, this happened...
George is guaranteed metres, he's not the type of prop who's going to get in your face and piss you off, but he's gonna get metres and he's gonna hurt you. He's all power and it's hard not to see him filling the void left by Sam. His try in the Grand Final, besides being one of the best front rower tries ever, opened the game up. The Rabbitohs had the edge, but the game was still in the balance, just. George stepped up and as great players do he demanded the spotlight. It's pretty hard to imagine exactly what George could become, he's already quickly climbed to the top (top 5ish) of the prop rankings. To say that the NRL is his oyster is an understatement.
Dave Tyrell - Mr Tyrell used to be a winger for the Rabbitohs Under 20's side. In 2014 he played every game for the best side in the NRL, as a prop. He moved from the wing to the forwards because he had to to have a career in the NRL. Here he is with a ring. The man. To say that every team needs someone who shows up for every hit up no matter what would imply that there are other players for the Rabbits who don't do that - they're greatness is that they all do. But, Tyrell simply does what is asked of him. Michael Maguire knows exactly what to expect from Tyrell and Tyrell does it well. An inspiration.
Apisai Koroisau - A dynamic hooker who beautifully filled in for Isaac Luke during the season and repeated the dose in the GF. When Koroisau left the field 3/4 of the way through the first half, the Rabbitohs didn't look quite as dangerous as when Koroisau was there. Luke Keary did a good job, but there's a subtlety to Koroisau's game that only a full time dummy half can have. He's able to get markers going one way then skipping out the other way, his speed gets him past the markers and nek minute the Bunnies are storming through the middle. Many people who don't play sport in such a manner sleep on players like Koroisau and it could have been anyone from Bryson Goodwin to Joel Reddy to Ben Lowe. It takes a certain level of mental ability to step up after riding the bench for a while, Koroisau didn't see much game time after Luke came back for the back end of the season and then he was starting in the GF.
Isaac Luke - Koroisau's ability to go from not doing much to starting a GF for the Rabbitohs can in part be because of Isaac Luke. We know about Isaac Luke. We have to, he's the best Kiwi dummy half, one of the best in the NRL, he's the mantis. So when it emerged that Luke had basically taken the judiciary's decision on the chin and dedicated himself to ensuring Koroisau was ready and being there for his team, I loved him even more. Luke is a great dummy half, the speed and power have been a staple of his game for years. The ability to wreak havoc around the ruck forms a blueprint for how the Bunnies attack and seeing similar attributes in Koroisau is not a coincidence. Of course, it would have been nice to see Luke play but we already know what he would have done and how he would have impacted the GF. Instead we saw just how influential he can be when he's not even on the field. Props bro.
