NRL Player Update

It's a slightly manic time in the NRL with clubs looking to get squads wrapped up before they start pre-season torture. A lot has happened and a few dominoes have begun to tip so here's what you need to know...

Anthony Watmough. He's gone to the Westside of Sydney, bit of a change in scenery heading from the beach to Parramatta. Watmough joins the Eels on a 4 year deal which you could assume will have a long reaching influence on other player movements.

The Sea Eagles have been in the mix to off load a fair amount of talent, I've stated that I wouldn't mind seeing Brett Stewart move on but we could now see Stewart remain at Manly. Watmough's departure ensures that there's a bit more cash floating around especially with Glenn Stewart also moving on. I'm picking Manly to not let anyone else leave, that means Brett Stewart staying, Steve Matai staying, DCE staying, K dot Foran staying thanks to a combination of new management and extra cash.

That's kind of off set by their recruitment which has been smart. They've signed Willie Mason, Siosaia Vave, Zane Tetevano and Uiti Baker who will all be on minimal money but add some much needed muscle to their pack. They probably forked out a bit more money on Feleti Mateo who'll add the skill void left by Glenn Stewart. So they let G Stewart and Anthony Watmough and added more muscle to their pack. Not bad.

The Eels, well besides Watmough they've added Beau Champion, Richie Fa'aoso, Brad Takarangi, Reece Robinson and Danny Wicks. They'd all be good signings if they had Jarryd Hayne still at the joint because their role players, job do-ers, guys who are tough professionals. I think Brad Arthur's going the tough route, he wants to build a squad who are gonna be rugged and rough, but I don't see a whole lot a x-factor.

The St George Dragons are building to off load plenty of their salary cap. They've gone the Penrith route, signing promising youngsters and guys who offer good value for money. Heath L'Estrange filled in at dummy half for the Roosters pretty well this season, Beau Henry is desperately seeking an opportunity, so to is George Rose and Eto Nabuli deserves a first grade opportunity after impressing at NSW Cup level for the Panthers. They will either have figured out their cap perfectly and put these guys around their top tier players, or they will rebuild and let the likes of Trent Merrin, Jason Nightingale, Gerard Beale etc go.

Lastly, Josh Hoffman as I predicted, shout out to me is heading to the Gold Coast Titans. Great move by Hoffman and the Titans as they both get what they wanted. Expect Hoffman to slot in to fullback for the Titans and with him at the back I'm picking them to be sneaky good next year.

That means that the Broncos have a bit more wiggle room, probably to get Darius Boyd, but that's not really surprising. What is more interesting is that it could keep Ben Barba in Brisbane, thanks to combination of Barba being a hard sell and the Broncos not having as much salary cap pressure. That's also helped by off loading Ben Hannant (Cowboys) and Martin Kennedy who's going back to the Roosters. I mean this Broncos side could still roll out a team with Ben Hunt and Anthony Milford/Barba in the halves with Boyd at fullback allowing either Milford or Barba to come of the bench and have free reign to wreak havoc. Slightly scary.
