The Return Of The Bucking Broncos

The Brisbane Broncos weren't a threatening rugby league team this season. They had some good pieces, a decent crop of talented youngsters and they had one of the best young halves in the game who played like he knew he was pretty freaking good. They had so much, but watching the Broncos play wasn't a must, it wasn't like 'oh shit, the Broncos are playing, let me stop chilling with the homies because I gotta see this shit'. It was just meh.

They weren't brutal, they didn't offer much razzle dazzle and they lacked a clear focus. This was not the fault of Anthony Girffin, he did a great job with the roster he had, but the Broncos were simply a mid-table side searching for an identity. We all know what has happened since, in the space of a few months everything has changed and now, in mid November they are one of the best NRL sides.

Congratulations Brisbane! The Broncos are the best side in the NRL in mid November! Cheeehoo. Obviously that means nothing but Wayne Bennett has come in to the joint, figured out what they need and simply got it. Jose Mourinho needed a striker, he got a striker and Chelsea are the best team in the EPL. Will the Broncos suddenly be awesome? No, but already Bennett has addressed the worries of many Bronco's faithful which is a fairly good start.

Before I jizz my undies about this Broncos side, I want to keep this football comparison rolling in to the back of the net. Long term, it's slightly worrying that the Broncos have chosen to welcome Wayne Bennett back as they're simply going round in circles. However, Bennett's a smart dude and I'm sure he's got a succession plan in the works. At any stage during Manchester United's current period of being shit (rejoice!) was Sir Alex Ferguson talked about as a coaching candidate? Nah, that ship has sailed yet the Broncos wanted a quick fix and brought Uncle Benny back.

Anywho, damn this Broncos side. Straight away they have sorted out their biggest problem from last season - the NRL is a league of beasts and freaks so you better have some tough buggers to sort that out. James Gavet and Adam Blair will do just that. Gavet was equally as impressive as Martin Taupau for the Tigers (off field stuff held him back) and will add some mongrel off the bench. Blair? Well Blair's coming off a great Four Nations and the connection to Uncle Benny is undeniable. Blair thrived under Craig Bellamy and I expect him to do the same under Bennett as Bennett understands Blair and what roles he needs to be put in. Next year you will see a forward pack with Josh McQuire, Corey Parker and Blair roaming through the middle. That's nuts. Then Sam Thaiday, Matt Gillett and Corey Oates out on the edges. Eeek. Gavet and another fresh signing Mitch Garbutt will add plenty of starch of the bench along with a few young guns coming through.

The genius at play is that all the new signings fit in around what's already there. Andrew McCullough will relish behind a pack that is on the front foot, so will Ben Hunt. Anthony Milford and Darius Boyd, well this is where things get scary. This year we saw the Broncos struggle to link some good performances in either their forwards or backs with the other. Some games Hunt would be fantastic, but his forwards couldn't keep Brisbane in the contest. Some games the forwards would be awesome, but they lacked the class to score points.

Milford and Boyd will eliminate those problems. There is now enough play making ability that the Broncos will be able to win games when Hunt isn't quite at his best or their forward pack isn't rolling down the field. Milford has shown that he can carry a team, score points with ease and set up his mates while Boyd is the perfect man to slip in to the back line and do any of the following - provide a link between the halves, be a decoy, do some play making himself (short balls to edge forwards/centres) and deliver the final pass to the wingers. There's way too many options for my mind to comprehend.

Who knows whether the Broncos will put it all together. It feels a bit like the Cleveland Cavaliers as they have all these top shelf NRL players but they've gotta figure it all out. But it's hard to see them failing as they've filled all the holes, cut the dead weight and are much more well rounded. Buck, buck, buck away.
