The Panel
Standout performer
Chief Biggums - Jarryd Hayne was the man on the weekend but didn't over play his hand. Slotted in smoothly into the backline to set up a try and picked up one for himself. Reminiscent of his '09 Hayne Plane but with more maturity and confidence about his play.
Mystery Doctor - Steve Matai was simply amazing. He ran like a man possessed, leading the pack and was a beast on D. Typical Matai performance.
The Bain - This round I will have to go with Nathan Peats. Had a beast of a game on the weekend. Tackle machine, dummy half runs and some ball play. Provided solid base for the backs to play off and even managed to dot over sneakily. Great buy for the Eels!
Senor Spectre - Konrad Hurrell! My god when he gets the ball everyone just gets jacked up. The Warriors change in form can single handily be put down to him (editors note - typical Grammar bias). Put him in the starting 13 and keep him there. He’s the goods.
Battler making his mark
Chief Biggums - Reece Robinson - I know he's not that old, but he actually performs pretty consistently despite being heavily underrated. He scored two tries in the opening 20 minutes over the weekend that set the mood for the Raiders for the rest of the game.
Mystery Doctor - I'm going back to back battler here, Nathan Friend was once again very good for the Warriors. Love his work out of dummy half and his toughness. He's a vital cog for the Warriors.
The Bain - Sam Tomkins (editors note - he's a bit beyond a battler). Has been almost non existent for the first few weeks. If you ask me I was expecting big things from both his Super League record and the form he showed at the Nines. Showed some superb ball handling ability and then chimed in well on occasions. Slinked and slid his way through the defence to score as well. Hopefully he keeps on improving!
Senor Spectre - Young Paul Carter was at his bruising best on Monday night. He seriously flew into tackles without any regards for his body and forced some mistakes from the Cowboys because of it. If he can channel that aggression in the best way, this kid will go far.
Biggest think you learnt
Chief Biggums - The Bunnies need a contingency plan for when they have some big guns out. Melbourne know how to win without them, Manly probably does it the best, even the Roosters know how to do it. The Bunnies backwagon's gonna be getting lighter if they can't win without all their stars.
Mystery Doctor - Terry Campese is back! Campo is leading the Raiders admirably and is feeding Anthony Milford all the opportunities he can.
The Bain - This year's comp is gonna go down to the wire. These results just get more crazy! Top 8 is gonna be so tight.
Senor Spectre - The game on Monday night between the Titans and Cowboys was the shittest game I’ve watched in years. Sub 60% completion rates, 30 odd errors, dropped balls on the first tackle – it was all a shambles. If I could get that 2 or so hours back my life would be much better for it.
Young gun watch
Chief Biggums - Anthony Milford just has that x-factor. You know something is bound to happen more times than not when he hast he ball. Now that he has Campese to work off his job will be easier and much more exciting to watch.
Mystery Doctor - Gonna have to agree with Baino here, Aidan Sezer is all class. If you're not keeping up with Wade Graham then you're missing out as well.
The Bain - I love my Titans so I will say the superman Sezer. Forming a strong halves pairing with Albert Kelly. Was a rock in the Titans ugly win over the Cows. He is a big unit for a 6 and has the cool, calm nature essential for the loose, outrageous character that is Albert Kelly. Drop goal to win it as well
Senor Spectre - There are a few youngn’s who are going good guns at the moment! Have to look what young Luke Brooks is doing at the Tigers and how is he building in every game he plays. Also James Gavet from the Tigers has been damaging defences all over the comp since round one.
Most impressive team performance:
Chief Biggums - I like the Raiders. They were working like a well oiled machine over the weekend. Everyone knew what their job was and pretty much did it. A team in unison is always hard to beat. They had the forwards going forward and backs playing skillfully off that platform.
Mystery Doctor - The way the Eels bounced back after a tough loss was very impressive. They are quick, mobile and aggressive which is how this season will be played. Jarryd Hayne stepping up as well is encouraging.
The Bain - The doggies bro. What a win! Absolutely smashed the storm. Even though Cam Smith was out.. they still came from 10 behind and it was in wet weather too. Big, big forwards led the way for Hodko and the grub Reynolds to show their class. Watch out for those doggies
Senor Spectre - The Sea Eagles are my most impressive team. Any team who can shut out the Roosters are doing a pretty damn good job. They are the most professional team in the NRL. A lot of people hate them, but they are impressive.
Team/player that needs a hug
Chief Biggums - The Sharks I guess for being winless still but at the same time the Knights for such an emotional display and victory for Alex McKinnon. Hugs all around I say. Also to the Cowboys who were the only team that lost by less than a converted try.
Mystery Doctor - Hard to go past Jerome Ropati here, he looked liked he was nearing some good form the boom. Besides that, Jonathan Thurston must be pulling his hair out so here's a hug mate.
The Bain - Sad, sad week for Alex McKinnon and footy in general. Just awful. Nobody deserves that. All the best for his recovery and future! So much support and expression just shows how highly he is respected. On a side note too, and once again, the Sharkies. Got pumped. Again. Boy do they need a win
Senor Spectre - Jerome Ropati. Not the guys biggest fan at all but you got to admit he cops injury after injury. This could have been his chance to finally get some games together, but now I can see him retiring come seasons end. Ain't no party like a Jerome Ropati.
