Diary Of A Warriors Fan
28-22. It feels like 36-4 or something like that. The loss feels much bigger than it was which is probably a lowkey good thing for any Warriors fan.
Loosing 28-22 when you don't really play your best footy and the other team is showing the desperation and desire of a top 4 side doesn't piss you off too much.
The Brisbane Broncos put in a pretty impressive display (more on that from the Mystery Doctor in The Bench), but the Warriors looked a little bit like a possum in the headlights ... even after their quick start.
As soon as things turned with a few penalties going against them, the lads didn't quite adjust and aim up as well as we (and they) would have liked. Coach McFadden said something along the lines of - it's all good in the hood to do everything well when things are going your way, but you have to be able to aim up and withstand the ol' momentum switch when things start going against you. The Warriors simply didn't do that.
But they still almost won. Your guess is as good as mine as to why the kept peppering Lachlan Maranta with bombs right up to their last set.
Who knows why David Fusitua didn't show up or why the introduction of Thomas Leuluai and Feleti Mateo kinda turned the Warriors in to jelly. There's no real answers, it was just one of those days where the team got away from the style, attitude and systems of the past few weeks.
As a fan, if you have one of those games and you loose by 6 points away from home, it's ok.
Agnatius Paasi didn't set the world on fire with his debut but I'm sure both he and Fusitua will be better off for the experience.
Dane Nielsen was pretty darn good if you ask me and besides his defensive lapses Ben Henry went pretty good as well.
The biggest questions come with regards to Coach McFadden and what he's gonna do selection wise. The back line is pretty set in stone with Ngani Laumape and Nielsen in a face off for that centre spot, but the forward pack...
Some would say we're spoilt for choice, but it feels like we have a few guys who haven't taken the bull by the horns and made a first grade spot their own. There's no reason why you would drop Leuluai after that one game, he gets a bench spot each and every week.
So does Mateo. And I reckon Jayson Bukuya should be starting with Benry off the bench. So that leaves a bench spot open for a big bopper ...
Jacob Lillyman, Nathan Friend, Suaia Matagi, Simon Mannering, Bukuya, Sebastine Ikahihifo
With a bench of - Leuluai, Mateo, Benry, Matulino?
Sam Rapira needs a place at some stage, but there's a group of guys who will just have to be patient - Charlie Gubb, the Lousi bros, Paasi etc.
Anyway, onwards and upwards. This is where we get to see what they're made of and how they bounce back...
Against Manly!? Ahhh k.
