Solving The Problem, One Good Deed At A Time

Every season we hear about the shenanigans that the NRL's finest get up to. Whether it's getting a bit sloppy in public, or some sort of violence or even taking a poo in a hotel lobby, the NRL has pretty much seen it all. So what can be done?

Something needs to be done. You can't keep serving up negative news every season and still expect to have greater financial success or build towards expansion. Why would anyone want to get involved in a sport where players have been known to piss in the direction of their own mouth? But I don't want to see the NRL become this silly competition where if you sneeze you get some sort of punishment, which we are seeing on the field as the game gets softer and they work towards a cleaner, safer image. Personally, I think that they're even going about that the wrong way - there's no consistency + they seem to ignore punishing the acts that probably disgust mums around the South Pacific like chicken wing tackles and crushers. But that's a yarn for another day.

Something needs to be done, so why not give every player a cause. Either give them a charity or a young person who is going through difficulty and make them accountable to them ... no, only give them a person or charity if they can't pick one themselves. That gives players the opportunity to pick a cause close to their hearts and allows them to act appropriately.

Obviously many, many, of the majority of players in fact already have the vibe. We've all heard of how Trent Hodkinson brings a smile to a child's dial by giving them a shout out on his kicking tee, awesome. Why stop there? Why can't every player do the same thing or something similar? It seems that many players are only willing to do the bare minimum, which in my opinion is an example set by the top.

Every new player to the NRL should pick a cause whether it's a person who is battling illness or whether it's simply their junior footy club. It should be mandatory and players could support this cause however they desire - simply giving people your time or making donations to the cause or using their profile to bring awareness. It should also be mandatory for the NRL to support this wholeheartedly -  a player can approach the NRL with an idea or something to help their cause and the NRL will do their best to support it.

Who knows, you might even witness competitive generosity where players want to one up team mates by donating more money, or putting more smiles on dials, or giving more of their time. You'd have a league full of players who will have to think twice before they do something dumb, not because some corporate sponsor who they couldn't give a shit about, but because the cause they've been working so hard to support will suffer.

I can hear you saying - but they give enough, I can hear the players saying - I give enough. No, you can never give enough.
