What's Your Flavour? Craig David Visits Mt Smart.

There's two sides to the coin with the Warriors. You can either have the attitude of pride when you see the Juniors consistently performing as they should, producing copious amounts of talented NRL players for both the Warriors and the rest of the NRL. Or you can have the attitude of slight bitterness, you can look towards the likes of Ivan Cleary, Peta Hiku, Sosaia Feki, Elijah Taylor, etc. and live in the past wondering how the Warriors let such talent slip between their fingertips.

What's your flavour? My flavour is definitely the former and with the Junior Warriors once again in the Holden Cup/Under 20's Grand Final I can't be anything less than super duper proud. I'm still super duper proud despite the fact that the Juniors have consistently done reasonably well while the first graders continue to show the shortcomings that have long plagued the entire club.

Sure, the lads who left Mt Smart could have led the Warriors to glory. Just look at Ivan Cleary, need I say more?? But living in past does nothing for nobody, maybe making you seem smarter when you tell your mates how good the Warriors could have been if they still had this guy or that guy. But ain't no one got time for that. It feels like the Warriors get the leftovers - there are 15 other NRL clubs who definitely have their eyes on New Zealand talent and there's only one NRL club based in NZ, not good odds. They've still been in 3/6 GF's. 50%. After Sunday they will have been in 4/7 and could leave with 3 titles in 4 GF's. Impressive.

The Junior Warriors consistently look like bullies. There are blokes in the current team who look destined for greatness - Sam Lisone and Tui Lolohea scream out at you and once again they've displayed this clutch that just consistently sees them do the rather impossible.

As you may have guessed, my flavour is definitely one of positivity. There aren't many clubs in the Under 20's era who have done what the Warriors have done, let alone play the way they play. It's the perfect mix of crazy talent and youthful excitement They haven't displayed the grit and toughness of many Aussie clubs, but there aren't many Under 20's teams who do. Seeing the Juniors make another GF somehow made me kinda forget about first grade, because here's our only NRL club doing what they should - dominating the competition. You know, I know, we all know it, we've all seen the sorts of athletes that we have in NZ and if the Warriors weren't consistently good the Under 20's you'd have to ask some serious questions.

The benefits aren't restricted to the Warriors, the rest of the NRL enjoys the fruits of their labour and tries to pick players up who have come through the Warriors system. This is where you can understand negativity, but for me, you can't keep em all and it brings me just as much joy to see guys doing the business on a bigger stage, at more historic clubs and in perhaps more professional environments. It's a production line that continues to churn out talent and that alone makes me happy.

The Junior Warriors deserve some props, they've got to the Grand Final once again and have shown the sort of desire to win that perhaps their first grade counterparts could learn from. Don't be surprised or upset however to see a few of the Juniors get picked up and leave our shores on the back of another strong season, it's good. It's part of the business.
