Diary Of A Warriors Fan - Poor, So Poor

Alright folks, first things first, there's no excuse with the travel. This is a professional sports team who have a lovely little deal with Air New Zealand and have everything at their disposal to perform at their best.

The Warriors simply weren't in the same league as the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Saturday night and it shows where this Warriors side currently is. There were a few wins against teams who sit together as the three of the worst teams in the NRL, games they should have won but the Rabbitohs proved to be a completely different kettle of fish.

17 errors to eight for the Bunnies.

30 missed tackles to 13 for the Bunnies.

A 52 percent completion rate, compared to 79 percent for the Bunnies. This was horrible.

I'm not one for knee-jerk reactions, which is why it I never really got too excited with three wins in a row. And I don't think it's too much of a knee-jerk reaction in saying that it was horrible, it truly was horrible.

The errors aside, the Warriors never really looked like they posed an attacking threat. The Rabbitohs are known for being an above average defensive side but the Warriors offered very little which is the problem. Shots weren't fired.

Everything looked rehearsed, structured and lacking in creativity or imagination.

For a team with so much talent, a halfback who thrives in hectic situations where he can use his vast array of skills, the Warriors seem very content in running structured second man plays. This leads me to a problem that shouldn't be caged in to this Rabbitohs game, it's a much more wide ranging problem; what is the Warriors identity?

What is the style of the Warriors?

They don't be keen to play like the Warriors of yester-year, throwing the footy around in unpredictable fashion which is extremely difficult to defend.

They aren't good enough to play like the Melbourne Storm who started all this block/second man play business and perfected it.

They may be trying to do a bit of both, but they are failing miserably.

There's no way that they are giving their defence much attention and to say that they are trying to become a team who grind you out of the contest, well that would be completely false.

The Raiders, Broncos and Dragons all look like they are having a whole lot of fun playing football and they play slightly differently. They all have their own unique style that's working for them because they offer something that defences haven't seen too much of. The Warriors look like they are playing catch up.

Ken Maumalo was much better this time around, but the start to every set kind of paints the picture. Honestly, I loved Maumalo's effort but every set started with a Maumalo carry, then Manu Vatuvei came in for a hit up. At some point, defences just load up on these two because there's no variety to test the defence, they know what's coming and they act accordingly.

It's the same with the fifth tackle options. I started counting how many bombs were put up, but I got bored. I'm not sure if it's the fault of Chad Townsend and Shaun Johnson, it could be Andrew McFadden telling them that this is the game plan, but every set seemed to finish with a bomb. Sure, you've got two tall wingers but teams know exactly how to block and when it's happening every set, you can get a jump start.

Where's the trick plays when your chasing a game?

Where's the stab into the in-goal?

Where's the chip to the centre channel?

Where's the banana kick for the fullback chasing through?

Where's the ad-lib footy?

WHERE'S THE FUN?

Well, that's if they got to the fifth tackle. Errors, horrible defence and a general lack of enthusiasm painted a stinker of a picture.

I want my Warriors side to be fun to watch, that's why I love this team, because I grew up watching blokes running around with smiles on their faces. They had a go, they tried things, they played fun footy. This Warriors side doesn't resemble any of that and while we've always wanted a Warriors side who could win a game 8-0, they haven't even put all their eggs in that basket.

Had the Warriors not made so many errors and missed so many tackles, this could have been closer. But the Warriors didn't really look like they were putting fear into the Rabbitohs, physically or with their skill. That's why Saturday night was shit.

It is also quite odd how out-spoken the Warriors were when the Parramatta Eels were in town and a few of their lads got concussed. When you speak up like that against an opposition team, you're setting yourself up for a double horrible standard. I love Simon Mannering, but he was definitely concussed and the Warriors didn't exactly cover themselves in glory there.

Regardless of if he was fit to come back on or not, when you're that out-spoken like that, you're going to raise many eyebrows.
