In Defence Of Konrad Hurrell...

Something really weird happened earlier this week.

A local 'news' outlet posted a video of Konrad Hurrell dancing

...for no real reason at all.

That raises obviously questions about Aotearoa's current news values but it also influences the public's perception of Konrad Hurrell.

I enjoy Hurrell, to the point where I felt like I needed to write him a letter.

I thought that I needed to remind Hurrell just how short NRL careers can be.

The issue around the video Hurrell posted while at that Ginuwine concert was also weird as it wasn't really that crazy an act - not like getting a gobby while you're driving.

But going to a concert while your team is struggling doesn't look great, so fair play.

For me, that was the line.

Making any sort of kerfuffle, whether positive or negative about Hurrell shaking his bum crosses that line.

I follow Hurrell on Instagram, so I get that delivered straight to my little handy phone thingy. If you don't want to see Hurrell being a funny bugger then you don't follow him on Instagram.

It's quite simple really. And most of what Hurrell posts on Instagram is funny or entertaining, so this is nothing new or crazy.

That's the main point here. If you want to watch Hurrell being funny, you can. If you don't then you don't even need to worry. But we certainly don't need to have any and everything that looks like it could hold a grain of controversy shoved down our throats.

The first issue here is that some 'professional' wrote an actual story that people click to read about a young man dancing ... on social media ... which any member of the public can view.

The second issue here is that Konrad Hurrell was recently nominated for the Ken Stephens Medal for his work in the community. But that doesn't deserve a headline does it?

No, surely not. Not when there's a video of Hurrell wiggling his bum and showcasing some rather nifty dance moves.

I, along with the Wildcard like to keep Hurrell honest. Not because we hate him and we see him as the root of all the problems a the Warriors - some of you do.

We want the best for Hurrell, which means that we hold him accountable for his actions and dish out praise when it's due. Right now it feels like everyone is looking for any sort of reason or angle to chop Hurrell down, which just isn't cool
