NRL Grand Final Fever - Tuesday

The pass of a skux deluxe

It's Tuesday and I was pretty excited about the Grand Final yesterday, but today is the start of that mid-week grind. Last night we had the Dally M awards which saw Jonathan Thurston win his fourth Dally M - bow down and tonight is the night for Justin Hodges' rendezvous with the judiciary.

A quick word about Thurston - bow down.

It seems like everyone has some sort of opinion about Hodges and whether he should play or not. Kiwi media folk who rarely watch more than one NRL game a week don't think Hodges should play as it would be farcical for the NRL to allow Hodges to beat the case. Hodges' peers in the NRL think Hodges should definitely play. Those are two large generalizations on my behalf, but it's a good way of looking at it as those in the NRL understand that Hodges didn't tip Aiden Guerra and that Guerra initiated the tip by jumping and those with little understanding want Hodges out.

I'm still sitting where I was yesterday on the matter. Farce and the NRL go together like roast lamb and mint sauce, so why would we care if there was one last farce for the 2015 season?

As a rugby league fan, I just want to see Hodges play so I don't really care if it looks bad for the NRL to flip flop on matters like this. Consistency has never been evident in the NRL judiciary so who cares?

I can't wait for it to be over though; tomorrow we'll wake up and all we'll have in front of us is the nitty gritty. Nitty gritty and not silly judicial shenanigans - seriously, how can anyone predict/debate what the judiciary will serve up!?

It's Tuesday and today, the players that I'm most looking forward to go at it on Sunday night are Darius Boyd and Lachlan Coote. Let's get one thing clear - the Cowboys wouldn't be in the Grand Final without Coote at fullback. He's been fantastic all year in offering a play-making role besides Thurston and he does a fair chunk of the kicking as well; Coote had the second most kicks of any Cowboys player against the Storm.

Boyd is fairly similar, but his value comes as a ball-runner and a passer. Here's a few comparisons of their respective seasons, keep in mind that Boyd has played seven fewer games this season.

Try assists - Coote has 15 vs eight from Boyd.

Average run metres - Coote averages 134.55 per game vs 130.47 from Boyd

Line breaks - Coote has 12 vs five from Boyd. Coote averaged 0.55 line breaks a game vs Boyd's 0.33 line breaks per game.

Hit-ups - Coote takes an average of 15.23 hit-ups per game vs 14.33 from Boyd.

Both Coote and Boyd have signature plays that you should keep an eye out for. Coote's left boot puts him on the left edge with Michael Morgan running the right edge allowing Thurston to float around. Coote loves to pop up on the blind-side down the left edge and combine with Gavin Cooper and Kane Linnett as well as delivering a raking kick down field.

Boyd is crucial to the Broncos thanks to his passing ability which sees him deliver a long or short pass right in the bread basket for a winger to score on an overlap. The Cowboys will know the threat that Boyd poses, but the beauty of this is that the Broncos now have Anthony Milford and Ben Hunt who are two little halves who love to run the footy. Defending against this will be a nightmare as you'd have to pay attention to Boyd lurking out the back, but give him too much attention and one of the halves will skip past you.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has been the premier fullback in the NRL this season, by quite some distance. However, Boyd and Coote have both consistently been in the NRL's upper tier as far as fullbacks go. Boyd missed the early part of the season but showed his class by returning from injury to play at a high level while Coote has definitely now filled the void left by Matty Bowen's departure. They are two of the top-five fullbacks in the game right now and it's gonna be a treat to see them go against each other.

It's Tuesday and after two of these NRL Grand Final Fever things, I'm about to wet my pants with anticipation.
