NRL Bottom 8 Review - Gold Coast Titans

James Roberts could be anything in the NRL, literally.

Gold Coast Titans

How long ago does the CoCo saga feel? Having you club caught up in a criminal case is never a good way to start you season, especially when your playing roster has some serious holes in it and you lack players of the highest calibre that other NRL teams have in abundance.

Which is why the Gold Coast Titans went so hard in pursuit of Daly Cherry-Evans. We all know what happened there.

At their best, the Titans of 2015 were a team with a solid forward pack, two good young halves and outside backs who do their jobs. This however simply wasn't seen enough and Aidan Sezer's inability to consistently string games together epitomised 2015's struggles for the Titans; with Sezer out, Daniel Mortimer got the nod. Who would rather out of those two lads?

We would have loved to have seen Sezer play more, not only because he makes the Titans a much better team but because he's just a quality half. Sezer showed, when on the field that he can control a game admirably with a slick passing game and an educated boot but there was a silver lining to Sezer's injury troubles, especially with him heading to Canberra next season.

The Titans were able to blood Kane Elgey, a young halfback who dominated the Holden Cup and who will at some stage be the face of the Titans should thinks go as planned. Elgey showed what he can do at various stages this season, but his struggles form the story of 2015 for the Titans. This season we saw many good young players get far more game time that would have been anticipated by coach Neil Henry, which is all fine and dandy when they are filling holes in an experienced team. But when you are rolling a team that largely consists of what were fringe first-graders, then you will struggle.

Had Nate Myles played more than 16 games and Greg Bird played more than 12 games this season, things might have been different. Those two are experienced NRL forwards who have seen it all in the NRL and we simply didn't see the Titans roll out a team with Myles and Bird in the side often enough. With Myles and Bird joined by Luke Douglas and Eddie Pettybourne, the Titans would have had a solid foundation from which players like Ryan James, Agnatius Paasi, Dave Taylor, Nathaniel Peteru and Matt Robinson could build on.

Instead, 2015 saw that second group of players take much of the burden of leading the Titans upon their shoulders which was never really going to end too well. As has generally always been the case, the Titans didn't get their money's worth with Taylor but they will benefit from having James and Paasi especially get plenty of minutes. Both James and Paasi played through the middle and on the edge, James impressed when he was pushed out wider while Paasi showed that he is cut from a similar cloth to Pettybourne in that he can do a job anywhere in the forward pack.

Let's not forget that Paasi joined the Titans from the Warriors in the off-season on a training contract and ended up playing 18 games.

Many will look at the DCE backflip as a failure for the Titans, but I like what they did during the season to fill gaps in their squad. Peteru moved across the ditch from the Warriors to bolster their forward pack while Nene MacDonald showed that he deserves to play in the NRL each week after joining from the Roosters. Chad Redman's arrival from Newcastle mid-season did the job then, but the Titans certainly don't lack options at hooker so expect Beau Falloon and Matt Srama to be moved on.

MacDonald showed some ability which in combination with James Roberts gave the Titans a weapon on either edge of the field. Roberts was easily the most threatening player for the Titans with his speed and strength almost impossible to stop one on one when Roberts has a bit of space. Josh Hoffman and David Mead were solid without really being spectacular, but they are both classy players who would have performed a lot better if they were finishing moves off as opposed to be relied on to set them up. It was nice to see Kalifa Faifai Loa bounce back from the CoCo saga but Kevin Gordon is in serious danger of seeing his NRL career slide off into oblivion, especially with Leva Li getting a game; the kid goes good.

It was a shame that the Titans got more headlines for off-field matters than their performances on the field, but even if you take the CoCo saga away, I doubt they would have made the top 8. The Titans lacked any sort of identity and didn't have a player with the level of quality required to really lead the team against the NRL's best. I would classify this as a bit of a nothing season for the Titans, but that's not a negative as they'll be better off as they rid themselves of the past.
