Diary Of A Warriors Fan: Beat 'Em Up, Throw The Footy Around And Smile

I'd listen to an argument that David Fusitua is among the NRL's best young wingers. I'd listen and nod my head in agreement.

Remember last time when our NZ Warriors faced Newcastle? It came after a slow start to the season, causing dramatic folk to rip in to the Warriors and then celebrate the Warriors for beating up a Knights side who will more than likely finish with a wooden spoon ... possibly a few wooden spoons if that's possible.

Once again the Warriors face the Knights and this must be considered a gift from Jah as the NRL schedule is a weird old thing. While they've already faced the Broncos and Storm twice, our Warriors won't be playing against the Cowboys or Sharks this weekend, nah, for the second time this season they'll face the Knights and that's got to be a great little bonus.

This puts me in a similar position to the last time the Warriors faced the Knights though as any sort of win against the Knights won't involve the Warriors 'turning a corner' or anything like that. Let's get this straight as the Knights aren't very good, the Warriors should win and if the Warriors do win, there's no need to huff and puff, inflating expectations through the roof.

Usually on a Friday I find myself trying to make sense of coach Andrew McFadden's changes to his team, which isn't an easy task. McFadden's selections didn't appear to be based on anything that I was seeing during the game, or in the stats after the game so it ended up being a case of trying to read McFadden's mind ... impossible. This is why we must rejoice as fans because McFadden has rolled out the same team from last weekend's win over Brisbane, to travel to Newcastle. This means that we will see...

Tuimoala Lolohea, Shaun Johnson and Thomas Leuluai continue to develop their combination. Peep SJ7 popping up on both sides of the ruck and for more involvement from Lolohea.

David Fusitua, Solomone Kata, Manu Vatuvei and Blake Ayshford continue to nail their big carries from deep in their own half ... Ayshford isn't quite as dynamic as the tokos. We know all about Vatuvei, but Fusitua is quickly establishing himself as a potent force on the wing, perhaps a top-five young NRL winger and when you consider that Kata is almost un-tackle-able ... I'm liking this outside back group.

Simon Mannering build on last week's performance. This means more offloads from Mannering and more passing at the defensive line, along with a bunch of tackles and general hard yakka in the middle.

Issac Luke and Nathaniel Roache settle into their rotation. Look for Luke to play most of the game with Roache giving him a brief spell, this keeps Luke's impact high as he gets a breather and can then come back and run a'muck.

And speaking of rotations - with McFadden rolling out the same gang of forwards, we will see Jacob Lillyman, Ben Matulino, Sam Lisone, Albert Vete and Charlie Gubb build on last week's work. Up to this point it was near-impossible to predict how many minutes our younger props would get and when they would come on, which would make preparing for a game pretty damn difficult for Vete, Lisone and Gubb who all deserve a fair share of minutes as they are just as ruthless as Lillyman and Matulino.

Players and coaches always say how important it is to have a clear job laid out for a player to do; making it as simple as possible. With a new bench each week, this was far from the case but hopefully now Lisone, Vete and Gubb know exactly what is required of them and how long they'll need to do it.

Last week we saw the Warriors play with a sense of freedom that many would assume is a Warriors style, yet we haven't seen that style of play for roughly 12-18 months. The Knights also love to attack and while they aren't very good, they have shown some razzle dazzle ability and can attack from anywhere. I'm not too fussed with the Warriors defence here because if the Warriors show up with that attacking intent, they'll score more points than the Knights and win the shoot-out.

What I'm most concerned about is that the Warriors will retreat back into their shell, trying to emulate the grinding style of footy of other NRL clubs. That's not the Warriors, that's not how I want the Warriors to play and it's not what the Warriors can build their club around. The Warriors blew Brisbane off the park last week by going all-in on a true Warriors style of footy and hopefully we see them build on that, not take a step backwards by engaging the Knights in a grind; beat them up, throw the footy around and smile.
