#KiwiNRL Isaac Liu's Roosters Extension + Zach Dockar-Clay Is Back
On the back of an impressive Rugby League World Cup campaign, Isaac Liu has been reward with an extension of his Roosters contract. Liu was already snapped up for a few more years but the Roosters have ensured that the Otahuhu Leopards junior will be locked down until 2021 and Liu will roll into his prime rugby league years with a simmering #KiwiNRL Roosters forward pack.
Liu was one of the Roosters best forwards this season, which coincided with Liu getting consistent game time as a middle forward. His late footwork and rugged work ethic saw Liu settle into the #13 jersey after spending the majority of his career up until 2017 coming off the bench, with Liu's major opportunity coming via #KiwiNRL toko Sio Siua Taukeiaho's injuries.
Then it was Taukeiaho who earned most of his NRL minutes this season off the bench and they both finished the season strongly. Liu doesn't quite have the mobility of Taukeiaho, but he does have a shimmy at the line and this allows him to get in-between defenders and doing damage with quick play-the-balls. Taukeiaho on the other hand is more similar to his Tongan comrade Taumalolo in that he runs the footy like the outside back he was at Aotearoa Warriors, with Taukeiaho's power ensuring that he's a nightmare to stop behind the ruck.
Taukeiaho was himself signed on a four-year deal ahead of the 2017 season and is contracted until 2020. Considering Taukeiaho battled some serious injury woes with the Roosters, this deal was a lovely nod of approval from the Roosters and they have stuck by Taukeiaho through those injuries. The Roosters also gave Jared Waerea-Hargreaves a long-term deal as he's under contract until 2020 as well.
Three Roosters forwards are contracted until at least 2020; Liu, Taukeiaho and Waerea-Hargreaves.
Chuck James Tedesco and Cooper Cronk in, playing behind this Roosters forward pack featuring three top-10 #KiwiNRL forwards and the Roosters will be a low key #KiwiNRL team to follow.
It's the opposite for outside back Joseph Manu, who is on the last year of his contract and is coming off a weird end to his 2017 season. Manu enjoyed steady game time for the Roosters at centre and then didn't feature in the back-end of the season with Roosters coach Trent Robinson instead opting for Mitch Aubusson and Ryan Matterson to fill centre/wing spots.
The Roosters have however invested heavily in Manu, having snapped him up from Tokoroa High School and I suspect we'll see Manu earn a new contract soon enough. Despite not having too much outside back depth, the Roosters let Roger Tuivasa-Sheck go to the Warriors and along with Manu coming off-contract, the Roosters only signed Blake Ferguson and Reece Robinson on one-year deals (Michael Gordon's likely to go to Gold Coast).
Up in Townsville, Zach Dockar-Clay has returned from his Super League excursion to sign with Townsville Blackhawks. Dockar-Clay was released from his Penrith Panthers contract to link up with Hull KR earlier this year in a mammoth Penrith release-fest and despite being a Junior Kiwis regular and sniffing around the NRL, Dockar-Clay has never really been close to earning an NRL debut.
What's super funky about Dockar-Clay's move to Townsville is that he is re-uniting with the bro Te Maire Martin. These two were the JK's halves pairing during some peak JK years that featured a heavy gang of #KiwiNRL talent and after playing together in the JK, they both moved to Penrith (ZDC from Parramatta and TMM from Wests Tigers). Now they're together in Townsville.
And the Blackhawks are a feeder team for North Queensland Cowboys, so if Dockar-Clay plays his cards right he could earn a cheeky look into a Cowboys gig. We also need to remember that Martin won't waltz into a Cowboys top-17 next season with Jonathan Thurston returning, which could possibly result in Martin starting the season in reserve grade. That'll depend on whether Martin earns a bench spot for the Cowboys as well as whether Martin will subsequently drop down to Townsville Blackhawks or Mackay Cutters.
