#KiwiNRL Stocks: Round Four's #KiwiNRL All Stars
Round four of the NRL has come and gone, meaning we are on to our second Bi-Weekly Kiwi All Stars team. As we roll through the weeks, we move closer and closer to the World Cup and the competition for places in that strongest Kiwis team is heavy. The likes of Dean Whare and Peta Hiku are playing consistently for Penrith, yet James Fisher-Harris is taking a few weeks off via injury and then you've got the two veteran wingers in Jason Nightingale and Manu Vatuvei who just aren't in contention either through injury or just not being good enough.
Fullback
Roger Tuivasa-Sheck
Still the best fullback we've got and while he's battled concussion to start the season, along with an under-par performance against the Dragons, you simply can't bet against Tuivasa-Sheck.
Wingers
Jordan Rapana/Jordan Kahu
The two Jordan's are the best #KiwiNRL wingers in the game right now with Kahu called on to kick goals and droppies, while Rapana is still a tackle-busting machine. Both are slick finishers who rely more on their nimble feet and dexterity to touch-down in the corner, with the only negative being that they won't be charging into the defensive line for big carries. Kahu's kicking ability could be low key crucial come World Cup time.
Centres
Dean Whare/Joseph Manu
The return of Whare has come with Penrith swapping him and Waqa Blake on a regular basis but we are seeing Whare work back to his best with strong defence and the ability to beat a defender one-on-one. I've obviously gone with a bolter in Manu - Peta Hiku is more likely to be selected, or Shaun Kenny-Dowall as a wing/centre - mainly because I want people to stand up and take notice about the kid from Tokoroa. He's starting as a centre for the Roosters with Blake Ferguson out and this selection is reward for that as Ferguson will slot back into that starting spot soon enough.
Halves
Shaun Johnson/Te Maire Martin
Forget the dramatic headlines you see about Johnson, he's still a match-winner. Those headlines are rooted in the fact that people still hold Johnson to the expectation that he'll control a game and produce moments of brilliance, like Jonathan Thurston. That's rarely been evident in Johnson's game, yet when he's playing alongside a solid half who is running their side of the field, Johnson is still capable of producing points. Kieran Foran is yet to return to the NRL and Martin has been stacking up minutes for Penrith, so I'm happily leaning towards Martin until Foran can show that he's worthy/fit of the call up.
Middle Forwards
Jesse Bromwich/Jason Taumalolo/Adam Blair
These three speak for themselves, with the only possible question mark floating over Blair's head. Blair has however enjoyed a fantastic start to the season with Brisbane, adding some go-forward to his niggle/offloading game. I'd still want Blair in there for his pressure on the kickers and to balance out the power offered by Taumalolo.
Edge Forwards
Manu Ma'u/Simon Mannering
Tohu Harris has yet to take the field for Melbourne this season and Kevin Proctor's not quite at his best just yet, so that has me riding with Manu Ma'u and Simon Mannering. Ma'u has to be selected if Harris isn't playing on that left edge and the work Ma'u does for Parramatta each week is brutal, with a splash of funk thrown in via some offloads. I'd pick Ma'u over Mannering for the edge spot and I'm still unsure of where Mannering fits in to a full-strength Kiwis team as it's possible that he slides behind Ma'u, Harris and Proctor if they are all fit and in form. Mannering can't be selected over Taumalolo at lock, but he's versatile and will do a job on the edge.
Hooker
Issac Luke
Still the best we've got and when playing behind this forward pack, he's a nightmare to stop around the ruck.
Bench
Kenny Bromwich/Martin Taupau/Nelson Asofa-Solomona/Jared Waerea-Hargreaves
Kenny Bromwich's ability to cover all positions has me selecting him as the bench utility over Peta Hiku, with Bromwich capable of playing dummy half if need be. Hiku has been doing a funky job for Penrith as a bench utility and Danny Levi has been starting at hooker for Newcastle, so they deserve a shout. Don't forget that Kodi Nikorima will come back into contention at some stage as well.
Taupau is a certainty, while Waerea-Hargreaves has been trucking through plenty of work for the Roosters and has played all four games so far this season. I'm definitely going with Asofa-Solomona over Joseph Tapine and James Fisher-Harris at the moment as the big Wellingtonian has started this season just as he finished last season (ruled out of the Grand Final via injury) and offers some serious impact off the bench.
We obviously can't forget about Foran and his return to NRL footy will be interesting viewing for #KiwiNRL fans.
Hiku and Levi are deserving of squad spots, we also can't sleep on the return of Nikorima.
Dallin Watene-Zelezniak would be the next outside back to get a shot and Shaun Kenny-Dowall has to feature in a Kiwis squad. Nightingale and Vatuvei are behind these lads in the pecking order.
Tapine, Fisher-Harris, Alex Glenn and Suaia Matagi are forwards who would make my squad.
Just as we've got to watch for Nikorima's return, Sio Siua Taukeiaho will come back for the Roosters at some stage and he'll be gunning to make a big impression. Chuck Harris in that category as he's a top-five #KiwiNRL player.
