Kiwi-NRL Spotlight: Jensen Taumoepeau Debut For Gold Coast Titans

Jensen Taumoepeau became the seventh Kiwi-NRL debutant of 2026 playing on the wing for Gold Coast Titans in their loss vs Sydney Roosters. The Western Suburbs junior from Taranaki plugged a hole left by another 2026 debutant Siale Faeamani who got first crack on the wing for Titans and after a tough outing against Daniel Tupou, Taumoepeau holds on to his spot for the Magic Round game vs Knights.

Taumoepeau and Faeamani were signed to Titans late last year as coach Josh Hannay refreshed his squad. Both were deep cuts that highlight nifty scouting from Titans as they were recruited from reserve grade in New South Wales, but Taumoepeau has been on a much longer journey in reserve grade having spent time in both NSW Cup and Queensland Cup with a bunch of different organisations.

Coming from the same junior club as Mawene Hiroti, Taumoepeau followed the same path by initially joining Rabbitohs after he left Aotearoa. Taumoepeau played one season of junior footy for Rabbitohs and then switched to Sharks where he played SG Ball Cup and Jersey Flegg Cup before wiggling into their wider NRL mixer.

Despite the chaos of the pandemic era, Taumoepeau played in five seasons of NSW Cup with Newtown Jets who are linked to Sharks. He started slowly with a few games in his first three seasons while still eligible for U21s before playing 18 games in 2022 and 14 games in 2023. It looked like Taumoepeau was on track to keep working through the Sharks system but those opportunities never swung his way and he moved to Townsville for the 2024 season where he played under the Cowboys umbrella.

Taumoepeau played 21 games for Northern Pride and had a NRL preseason appearance early that year, which led to an opportunity in Canberra. Taumoepeau then played two NRL preseason games for Raiders and enjoyed his best sason of footy with 26 games of NSW Cup and scored 11 tries, both of which were career highs at that level.

Raiders didn't give Taumoepeau a crack at NRL footy and then Titans announced they had signed Taumoepeau to an NRL tier contract after seven years of grinding in reserve grade. Faeamani started round one on the wing for Titans and Taumoepeau started this season in Q Cup for Tweed where he played five games, scored three tries and had 2+ tackle breaks in all five games.

In his NRL debut, Taumoepeau had 14 runs - 139m @ 9.9m/run with a linebreak. Titans are 16th on the ladder and haven't made much progress so far under coach Hannay, so their Magic Round game vs Knights will be another tricky challenge for Taumoepeau. He will line up against either Greg Marzhew or Dominic Young and Knights are in sizzling form, so it will be an interesting contest for Titans.

The crossover with Hiroti continues into 2027 as he will move to Titans. They are part of a growing group of talent coming from Taranaki with Tiana Davison (Waitara) and Gayle Broughton (Hawera) in the Kiwi Ferns. Davison is joined by Charley Lahmert (Bell Block) at Knights with Lahmert shining as a hooker in their U19s team this year.

Another Western Suburbs junior Kahu Capper on the rise with NZ Warriors. Middle forward Jake White (Bell Block) has had a rapid rise since leaving New Plymouth as he made the Australian Schoolboys team alongside Antonio Verhoeven last year and has progressed through U19/U21s for Sharks.
