Drake - If You're Reading This It's Too Late

Drizzy Drake, I've paid about as much attention to him in recent years as I have to silly politicians. Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late came pretty much out of nowhere and for some reason I felt compelled to give it a twirl, to see what Drake's been up to recently and to see if I should tune in again.

Yes, again. I enjoy Drake and when he was on his come up, he delivered music as such, there was an urgency to his sound that when coupled with his apparent vulnerability on the mic made for some interesting music.

The only thing I've listened to over the past 48 hours or so is Drake. But I don't know if it's Drake.

Drake is apparently at the top of the pops, he's on the throne as the preying mantis of hip hop and if you ask him, everyone's gunning for his spot. On If You're Reading This It's Too Late though it sounds as though Drake has taken bits an pieces from hip hop, obviously bits and pieces that are doing pretty well and he's put his spin on it.

Whether it's yelling the final word of each bar like a few other rappers, or straight up sounding like Rae Sremmurd (#SremLife) on 'No Tellin', Drake seems comfortable taking what's hot and adding some thumping bass and adding some of his crooning.

There's some clever lines, some witty word play and rhyme schemes that are decent but Drake doesn't offer much in the terms of unique lyrics. Nor is he leading our generation, providing hope and education, he's just telling us that he bangs strippers. And that sometimes he's lonely.

In my time listening to this project I've had some good times, zoning to that those thumping beats and Drake's words that aren't too heavy. For sure, chuck this on in the background to set the tone, to get some feel good vibes flowing through the room.

The problem with Drake and this album thingy is that I can get everything I want from a whole bunch of other hip hoppers. Nothing that Drake does is really unique. If I want lyrics, I'll go elsewhere. If I want flow, ditto. If I want a banger to get everything fired up, I'll probably just bang some DJ Mustard or something. If I want songs that make you think, inspire or get all hip hop nerd on it, clearly I won't listen to Drake.

But the beats bang and the lyrics are simple, so you can rap/sing to your heart's content.

The thing that got me about this release, was that Drake talks a good one. Apparently people hate him and he has enemies, which in part causes him to spit bars that are aggressive, or could be seen as shots aimed at some people. Throughout this, Drake sounds like he's trying to prove something, that he's rough and rugged, that he's made it, that he's doing this or that. That he's really, really rich. It's odd.

You could make the argument that If You're Reading This It's Too Late is one big contradiction. But that's for another day.

If you like Drake, go get it, you'll like it because it's that same old Drake. If you're undecided, get it, because, well then you can make up you're own mind. If you don't like Drake, don't give this any attention.

Personally, If You're Reading This It's Too Late left me feeling like hip hop has moved beyond Drake and more notably beyond Cash Money/Young Money. The Lil Wayne vs Birdman dramas screams of them trying to be relevant, to be in the news, to get headlines. If You're Reading This It's Too Late is meh, in a world where we get some damn fine hip hop.

Sorry Drizzy, I've moved on.
