Flying Kiwis – October 13

Winston Reid – West Ham United (English Premier League)

There’s precious little action to talk about with another damn international window robbing us of our club football, but there’s one thing in particular that needs some ironing out.

(No West Ham = Irons pun intended.)

Specifically, it’s Winston Reid’s transfer status. To put it frankly, don’t believe anything that you read from the kiwi media (apart from us – we got ya back). Our national fish & chip wrapper and their less prestigious rivals are prone to reporting these wild speculations about Reid. It ain’t true. This week it was reports that a £15m move to Liverpool was imminent. People actually believe this crap.

Look, nobody in this country has any links to the inner workings of West Ham’s boardroom. Even the best sources in England’s gossip columns are exactly that. Gossip. All based on giant leaps and assumptions. We wanna see Winnie lining up in the Champions League, but it just doesn’t happen like that. If anything legitimate comes up you’ll read it here.

In the meantime, here are the facts:

  • Reid is under contract until June 2015. The end of the season.
  • Therefore until he signs a new deal, he’s free to walk at the end of the campaign.
  • No team is paying £15m in January for a guy they can get for free 6 months later. Not even Liverpool.
  • West Ham have opened contract negotiations with Reid, and are hopeful of happy returns.
  • So, basically, if he wants to leave he’ll probably go on a free. If he plans on a stay, he’ll sign a new deal. Simple, really.

The way things work with footy rumours is you assume right off the bat that everything is wrong. Wait to be convinced by actual quoted sources and realistic logic. Let them earn their stupid ‘exclusives’ instead of making bank off click bait, which is all they’re doing. Definitely don’t trust anything from the non-reputables. Fan pages, tacky twitter accounts, websites not kept up to date, etc. And follow every lead. “The Daily Mail is reporting…” – so check out the article on the Daily Mail. If they have quotes from Arsene Wenger or Brendan Rodgers specifically mentioning Reid, get hopeful. If not, it’s probably bollocks.

Chris Wood – Leicester City (English Premier League)

As always, it’s a matter of biding time with this fella. But this week, with everyone else off, Woody actually got some work in. He featured in a friendly against Aston Villa and did himself no harm with a couple goals in a nice win. A nice chance for a run-around, and something for Manager Pearson to have a little ponder about.
