A-League Week 6 With Ze Phibber

The 6th week of footy has come and gone and we saw some pretty darn good games. The Brisbane fans finally were able to breath a sigh of relief, with the Roar coming away with the 3 points. They managed to get up over the Newcastle Jets with a 4-0 win thanks to the Brazilian Henrique who came on as a substitute, put away a hat trick and set up Steven Lustica as well, now if that is not a super sub then I do not know what the heck a super sub is, what a game from Henrique.

The Roar looked rather average in the first half and I thought the match was destined to go the way of previous matches, with the Roar squandering chance after chance. Then the second half came around and the Roar looked a completely different side (thanks to the Brazilian) they were able to string together some great plays and then when the opportunity came to shoot they were able to put the ball in the back of the net! I almost could not believe they were scoring goals, and good goals to. Newcastle hardly deserve a mention, terrible game from a team who had a chance to grab some points off an out of form Roar. Well done to the Roar who hopefully will now have exited their 2014 slump and might be able to start testing a few teams.

The second game of the week was between good old Wellington Phoenix and Adelaide United. And much to my disappointment the Nix where unable to hold out a dangerous Adelaide side and went down 2-1. Not only is it heart break losing, but losing in the last minutes of the game is just unbearable. Goals to Roly Bonevacia (Wel), Nigel Boogard (Ade), and Sergio Cirio (Ade).

The Phoenix managed to put together many good passages throughout the game and their goal was an absolute gem, I think we really deserved to salvage at least a point from the match. We are starting to look pretty dangerous especially out wide with Roy Krishna (the road runner) having speed to burn and the skills to take on players. It's awesome to see a team go from defending to attack so quickly and when you are able to turn that counter attack into a goal it's just great football to watch. It was not all great football for the Nix however, our marking and all round defending on set pieces was woeful and that is ultimately what lost the game for us. Either choose to mark zone or man mark, just please don't do what ever mixture that was ever again.

The third match of the week was between Sydney FC and The Melbourne Victory. I had eagerly awaited this fixture as these two teams are arguably the best two in league. And for the second time in as many weeks Sydney were unable to get on the score sheet and neither was their opponent with the match finishing in another entertaining 0-0. Both teams had disallowed goals in the first opening minutes for being offside. The Victory's offside however was just plain stupid, it was such an amateur move from Fahid Ben Khalfallah who instead of acting like a man and taking on Janjetovic he acted like a school boy bitch and passed to a clearly offside player. As a result of this pussy play I have awarded him the Phibber's Knob Of The Week, back yourself mate.

Bersat Berisha is lucky not to get it for being an idiot and getting into the offside position in the first place. Once both teams got settled in and starting staying onside the chances started coming, and coming, and coming, and coming. Both keepers had absolute blinders and were able to pull off some magnificent saves, however some of the finishing should have been better. Archie Thompson definitely should be disappointed with himself and so should Alex Brosque, who managed to beat Coe but could not find the net putting the ball over the bar from about 8 yards. Any way once again although the game finished with no goals, the amount of chances created made for a bloody exciting game of footy.

The in form Perth Glory and the Western Sydney Wanderers then went in to battle. Perth were able to come away victorious 2-1, giving them their first win over the Western Sydney Wanderers in the clubs history. Goals to Dino Djulbic (Per), Scott Jamieson (Per) and apparently Joshua Sotirio (Wes). I am still yet to see the Wanderers play to their full potential, and they were lucky that the Glory players were poor with their attacking headers as they should have really capitalised on at least 3 headers inside the box. What they did capitalise on however was an absolute pinger of a free kick from Scotty Jamieson, who managed to curl one in to the corner from about 30 yards. Obviously this deserves the Phibber's Goal Of The Week. The Phibber loves a great free kick, well done Scotty. Aside from the great free kick the Glory did look dangerous and they showed that they are still the team to beat regaining their place at the top of the ladder.

The final game of the 6th week was between Melbourne City and the Central Coast Mariners. Now this was an exciting game of football, which ended up finishing in a 2-2 draw. Goals to Mate Dugandzic (Mel), Erick Paartalu (Mel), Glen Trifiro (Cen) and John Hutchinson (Cen). I really enjoyed the style of football that City played, they weren't afraid to have a dig from outside the box and as a result we saw plenty of great strikes where great saves had to be made.

This is what we don't see enough in the A-League, too many players pussy foot around trying to get into the perfect position before having a dig. Sure maybe you will muff one every now and again, but if you manage to let loose a rocket into the top corner everyone is gonna love you and you are gonna look like a god. Now City may have played great football throughout the match but my word what a come back from the Mariners. What really sparked the team into life was the absolute sizzler of a free kick from Glen Trifiro in the 79th minute. This gave the Mariners the belief that they could salvage something from this game and salvage something they did with John Hutchinson tucking away a long range effort in the 94th minute. Absolute heart break for City who looked dangerous throughout the match but where unable to get the result.

This concluded the 6th week of the Hyundai A-League, next week it is up to the Nix to take down the in form Perth Glory. Can they do it? I think so, at the risk of looking like an absolute fool again I'm going to throw it out there and say the Nix are gonna win 2-1 with two goals coming in the second half. Come on you legends.
