Kiwi-NRL Spotlight: Makaia Tafua Debut For New Zealand Warriors
Makaia Tafua became one of eight Kiwi-NRL debutants in 2026 when he played 16 minutes off the bench for New Zealand Warriors in their round 15 game vs Sharks. The Linwood junior from Christchurch joined younger sister Jaydika (Papanui) in playing NRL/NRLW and younger brother Evander (Sydenham) is working his way through the Bulldogs system.
Kiwi-NRL debuts in 2026
Jaydika has already played 14 games of NRLW for Sharks after making her debut last season and is usually coming off the bench to play edge forward. Makaia has come off the bench in both his games for Warriors this season and this followed two appearances in NRL preseason, having been a consistent member of the NSW Cup team that won that competition and then the State Championship last season.
Tafua showcased his crisp passing, dynamic running and brutal defence in his NRL game time. The 22-year-old's toughness and physicality has been evident at every checkpoint., led by the fact that Tafua played men's footy in Christchurch for Linwood before moving to Auckland and then played men's footy in Auckland for Otahuhu after the Under 19 SG Ball Cup season in 2023.
That flowed into the 2024 NSW Cup season where Tafua played 17 games and just three games of U21 Jersey Flegg Cup. He repeated the dose in 2025 with 16 games of NSW Cup and seven games of U21s. His class was on display in U21s where he averaged a try per game in each of his two seasons and with three tries in 12 games of NSW Cup this year, Tafua has at least three tries in each of his three NSW Cup seasons.
Like his Christchurch uso Tanner Stowers-Smith and Eddie Ieremia-Toeava, Tafua gathered plenty of NSW Cup experience to prepare him for NRL footy. He made his NRL debut after 42 games of reserve grade and is now relied on to play 80 minutes as starting hooker, having played a bit of middle forward in previous seasons when Samuel Healey was in the starting hooker role.
Tafua is the first Kiwi-NRL junior from Christchurch to debut this year and the second from the South Island after Greymouth's Antonio Verhoeven debuted for Broncos. Tafua is one of many emerging Warriors who are eligible for Samoa and he could sneak into Samoa's World Cup squad as dummy half cover, while also eligible to represent Aotearoa. Jaydika has already played for Samoa and NZ Kiwis are well stocked for hookers right now, so it seems likely that Tafua will start his international career with Samoa.
