Flying Kiwis – February 10

Flying Kiwis will keep you up to date on the endeavours of New Zealand sports folk overseas. Not the battlers, mind you, but the genuine overlooked and underappreciated superstars that for some ridiculous reason don’t get a look in on local media.

Chris Wood – Leicester City (English Championship)

Leicester City broke a nine wins out of ten streak with a 2-2 draw with Watford at home, but they sure had to earn it. Watford went 2-0 up early on, and though Matty James pulled one back just before half time, it wasn’t until the deep into injury time that Danny Drinkwater finally levelled things for LCFC with an absolute stunner. Wood, who like everyone in this feature (except Tommy Smith) has been struggling with injury, has only played 15 mins of football all year, was thrown on with 84 gone, Manager Nigel Pearson sacrificing a centre-back for Wood as they struggled for the equaliser. It worked. In fact Wood nearly set up a winner during the final scraps of the game. He only managed 6 touches, but his height and physicality were valuable, and even if he isn’t gonna be first choice for the Foxes, Wood showed the different option that he provides off the bench at least. Leicester have played a few extra games than some of their closest rivals, but even after mid-week catch-ups, they’ll remains at least 5 points clear at the top.

Tommy Smith – Ipswich Town (English Championship)

Somewhat of a trend here, Ipswich had to come from 2-0 down to earn themselves a point at relegation-zoned Barnsley. In fact, they waited until much later to make their comeback, with Christophe Berra pulling the first goal back after 81 minutes, and David McGoldrick added the other 3 mins later. Smith was probably out-shadowed by his CB partner Berra, who was the Man of the Match, though he was excellent himself, playing the full 90. He could have scored with a couple of decent shots on target, and was better than usual in possession of the ball and with his distribution, even with his reliance on the long ball. It was a game that Ipswich would have been targeting to win, and they certainly created the chances to do so. Still, the point keeps them in seventh, though now 3 points out of the playoffs.

Up Next: Blackpool at home, 4am Sunday

Winston Reid – West Ham United (English Premier League)

The road to recovery continues for Reid, he had another late substitute appearance as The Hammers pulled out a crucial 2-0 away win at Aston Villa. On the basis of his early season form, you have to think that he’ll be right back in as a starter as soon as he’s fit to play 90 minutes. His 16 minutes in this game were pretty light weight, West Ham were just trying to kill the game by that stage, and he only touched the ball 4 times in that entire stretch, winning one header. Manager Fat Sam Allardyce called it a fantastic win though, and the three points claw them 2 points clear of relegation. Reid will be a valuable cog in the machine, with a double gameweek coming up. All hands on deck.
