Fergie's Chewing Gum - May 14

England

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2013/14 English Premier League Champions are Manchester City! For the second time in three years the former noisy neighbours have claimed the league title for their own, though this one was a little more comfortable than 2012’s heart-stopper. Needing a win or a draw at home against West Ham to be sure of things, City were out of the blocks in a hurry. Laying absolute siege on the Hammers, they finished with 28 total shots. An early goal wasn’t forthcoming, but a deafening cheer arose among the crowd anyway. Liverpool had fallen behind against Newcastle. Spurred by that news, David Silva gave City the lead five minutes before the half. Then, after the break, captain Vincent Kompany deservedly added a second and it was gonna take a miracle for Liverpool to win now. The Reds completed their own comeback, with an Agger and a Sturridge goal sealing a 2-1 win, but West Ham were never going to score the three goals needed to do their bit. 2-0 the final score at the Emirates, and the crowd absolutely flooded the field. Eventually they managed to clear the field and the trophy was awarded within a symphony of blue moon chanting and singing. Deserved winners.

Elsewhere Chelsea had to come from behind against relegated Cardiff, but they did for a 2-1 win that sees them take third place. The final Champions League spot was already guaranteed to Arsenal, and they celebrated with a 2-0 win over Norwich. Aaron Ramsey scored a beauty in the game which saw the Canaries officially relegated, though it was already a done deal.

Everton finish sixth, and Tottenham seventh after both won. Southampton and Manchester United closed things out with a 1-1 draw. It is already confirmed that that game was the last at United for Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic (who, in true fashion, finished the game all bloodied after an elbow from Ricky Lambert) along with Ryan Giggs as manager. With Louis Van Gaal supposedly on his way, a £100m transfer kitty to play with, and players such as Patrice Evra and Giggs (as a player) coming off-contract, things will no doubt look very different at Old Trafford next year. Southampton themselves are facing a crucial summer after their superb season. Man Utd are closing in on Luke Shaw as a replacement for Evra, and Liverpool are very interested in Adam Lallana. The Saints will do well to hold on to their two best players.

Spain

It will all come down to the final game. For the second unthinkable week in a row, all three of the table toppers dropped points. All three thus blew chances to take a hold of the title race, and in Real Madrid’s case, they fell clean out of it.

Each of the three games in question kicked off at the same time. Real Madrid away to Celta Vigo; Atletico hosting Malaga; Barcelona at Elche. Real Madrid has blown three chances to put themselves in the driver’s seat for La Liga. After Ronaldo’s last minute equaliser at Valencia seemed to keep their season alive, his injury at Valladolid has derailed it. Those two draws left them relying on other results to get them back in it, but even as those results miraculously manifested, they stumbled to a 2-0 loss at Celta Vigo. With no Ronaldo, and also no Bale or Benzema, a rare chance to rest a few guys backfired. They definitely had the chances to win the game. A majority of possession failed to convert itself into threatening opportunities without the usual attacking trifecta. In the end it was defensive errors that cost them. Real are now five points back and officially out of the title race. Good thing they have a Champions League Final to look forward to.

Meanwhile Atletico Madrid and Barcelona were both stumbling to disappointing draws. Given the other results, had Barca won, they would only need a draw against Atletico in the final game to win the league. Had Atletico won, the title would be theirs. Instead that game will decide everything. Barca have to win. Atletico need to win or draw. 4am, Sunday morning: Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid. Exactly at the same time as the FA Cup final. But, hey, that’s why the internet exists.

France

They won the league, now Paris St Germain officially also boast the best player in the French Ligue 1 with Zlatan Ibrahimovic winning the award. PSG won the league with a 3-1 over Lille during the week with the win giving PSG the record for most points in a season - 86. The record was previously Lyon's from '06 but with Ibrahimovic netting 25 goals and PSG also claiming the best goalkeeper and young player in the league (Salvatore Sirigu and Marco Verrati) it's easy to see how PSG had a record breaking season ... oh and they also had a total of six players in the team of the year with those three joining Thiago Silva, Thiago Motta and Edinson Cavani

Italy

After guiding Juventus to their third straight Serie A title, coach Antonio Conte's head could be on the chopping block after he declared that he may have taken Juve as far as he could. Juve hold much bigger ambitions than the Serie A and are keen to perform in Europe and many believe Conte is not the man to take them forward. The one and only Zinedine Zidane's named has cropped up as he is serving as an assistant at Real Madrid ... Zidane's name has also been floated for a few coaching gigs in France as well so look to him to get a start somewhere pretty soon.

The other major news out of Italy was Roma's re-signing of Mialem Pjanic. Pjanic is a 24 year old midfielder who was gaining the interest of some big clubs around Europe (obviously PSG were at the top of that list). It's a big signing for Roma who finished second this season and could definitely push for higher honours next season, especially with Pjanic locked in for four more years. Here's what he can do...

Germany

Once again the top teams all won, and the bottom teams all lost in the Bundesliga. Bayern fell one point shy of their own record points total of 91. If not for their slight hiccup after sealing the title then they surely would have done it comfortably. Dortmund finished 19 points back in second, Schalke a further 7 behind in third. Ultimately this was all Bayern’s season though. They won’t see it as a success after the ease at which they were bundled out of the Champions League semis, but domestically nobody could touch them. Not when it mattered. Here’s to Bayern Munich. May your song always be sung. May your goals always be 35 yard volleys.
