Debating the Underrated

So the Premier League season is over, a time where people look back and choose their picks of the season. Players of the season, teams of the season, and games of the season have all been debated and us at The Niche-Cache will hit you with ours soon but for now I want to debate those that have slipped under the radar over the years.

I'm picking a team of underrated heroes, a group of players who wont find themselves in a team of the season but have been just as important to their teams success down the years as the superstars. Not only are these players who are often over-looked but these are players who play for teams who don't necessarily win titles and have humble ambitions, teams that glory hunters call cannon fodder. Here is my team of underrated players who currently play in the Premier League and served all the teams they've played for admirably, here is an acknowledgment of the unsung heroes.

                                                           J. Jaaskelainen

S. Reid                            S. Distin                                C. Davis                           M.Taylor

 L. Osman                        S. Sidwell                             M. Noble                       K. Richardson

                                                                 K. Nolan

                                                                 F. Campbell

Jussi Jaaskelainen

Old Jussi has been in English football for 17 years and been one of the most consistent goalkeepers for over 10 years in the EPL. The Finnish keeper is 39 and still going strong pulling of fantastic reflex saves which have become a given every week. A majority of his career was spent at Bolton under Sam Alladyce where for a certain amount of time he was one of the best keepers in the league. Many a game Jussi has frustrated teams with his safe hands, excellent shot-stopping, and leadership. He has high standards which is exactly why in his late thirties Alladyce took him to West Ham to have another shot at the Premier League, he's has been injured a large portion of this season but no doubt Hammers fans will hope to see him back between the sticks next season.

Steven Reid

Reid has been a steady and reliable player for the likes of Millwall and Blackburn for many years and still is a regular for West Brom. At all three of these clubs he has played in a different position and has nailed himself down as a regular starter at right wing, centre mid-field, and right back in the Premier League. That in itself is a great achievement and one not many other players can do. Reid has been a consistent performer for 10 years in the top-flight with driving runs, brilliantly timed tackles, a fierce shot, and a good range of passing. He was signed at Blackburn as a winger at first before Hughes converting him to a midfielder to make the most of his drive and tenacity. After a few bad injuries and a loss of pace Reid reinvented his game and after a spell outside the top flight managed to force his way back with West Brom as a right-back. He rarely make a mistake and when he does he has the guts to not hide away and still gets himself stuck in, a top pro.

Sylvain Distin

No doubt about it, Distin should have been called up to play for France in his career. The man is a colossal defensive powerhouse. He is quick, strong, smart, and good in the air. He's a strikers nightmare and a managers dream. Even now at the age of 36 Distin is vital to Everton, a team competing for Europe every season and despite his age has not lost any of his pace. He also has the record for the highest amount of performances in the EPL from a foreigner. He is the kind of player who deserved to be at a bigger club and playing in the Champions League and France have missed out big time. To date his only silverware was the FA Cup in 2008 with Pompey where he had a fantastic partnership with Sol Campbell. At 36 he may struggle to add to that but lets hope he does.

Curtis Davis

Davis is one of those players that should or should have achieved a lot more in his career. Unfortunately for Davis he's had his career interrupted by injuries and because of this he is 29 and barely made over 300 appearances in his career when at that age he should be hitting the 450 mark. Despite this he is pure quality, reads the game well, is strong, quick, and good on the ball. At a young age he was compared to Rio Ferdinand and I think that without his injury troubles he would have gone on to play for England. He still may as many consider him an outsider to make the World Cup squad after captaining Hull through a successful campaign this season that could still end with an FA Cup if they defeat Arsenal at Wembley. As a fan who stresses about every England squad, I wouldn't mind seeing him in the squad.

Matt Taylor

Super Matty Taylor has been a top performer in the Premier League for 10 years now and it's a crime he never got called up for England. For years England were searching for a suitable back-up for Ashley Cole at left-back. This has seen the likes of Konchesky and Shorey being called up so how the hell did Taylor never get picked!? Taylor has a monster of a left-foot and has scored some of the best goals ever seen in EPL history and most of them at Pompey. He also went onto play for Bolton and now West Ham where he played in a more advanced role to make the most of his attacking ability. Great in the tackle, top crosser, goal threat from all angles, and a leader Taylor is a fans favorite wherever he goes.

Leon Osman

Osman is a player who eventually got what he deserved and graced the England team last year but he should have been called up long before that. He is a very clever player and has been instrumental for Everton for 10 years. Smart, consistent, technically gifted, and a one club man Osman is the sort of player that would be appreciated more if he was Spanish. He's also a leader whose not afraid to put his foot in when needed. A loyal servant, another player that fans love.

Steve Sidwell

Sidwell first graced the Premier League when promoted with Reading in 2006 before being snapped up on a free transfer by Mourinho's Chelsea. It was a bizarre bit of business as it was announced before the seasons end and was not a big name signing that was expected of big-spending Chelsea. He spent one season there and made 15 appearances before playing for Aston Villa and now Fulham. Wherever he has been he has shown quality, an all-round box-to-box midfielder who can also chip in with goals. Strong in the tackle and composed on the ball Sidwell is also a very good finisher and like former team member Frank Lampard, he also times runs into the box to perfection. He unfortunately got relegated with Fulham this season but im sure an EPL club will snap him up in the summer.

Mark Noble

Noble is a fans favorite at West Ham and its not hard to see why. He runs all day for the cause and steps up to make things happen for his team. A good range of passing, good tackler, and high mileage every game. He is another player who has been talked about as deserving an England call-up and although he may not be international quality, he is worth his weight in gold for his boyhood club.

Kieran Richardson

Richardson was lucky enough to be called up for England and impressed scoring two goals. After starting his career at Man United he showed great promise and excelled further with a loan spell at West Brom. He later joined Sunderland where he showed versatility being able to play left-wing, left-back, and midfield. He's a talented player with pace, trickery, good last ball, crosser and chips in with his fair share of goals. He's had injury problems in the past and that have hampered his progress and despite being relegated with Fulham this season he is a quality player at EPL level. We'll no doubt see him back in the EPL very soon.

Kevin Nolan

Nolan is a player who deserves to have international caps to his name. For over a decade Nolan has captained every team he has played for and performed at a consistent top level. His goal-scoring record from midfield is fantastic only being beaten by Lampard. He is a top finisher and has a scary knack of being at the right place at the right time. He is an absolute pro and its a shame he hasn't been given the credit he deserves throughout his career.

Frazier Campbell

Strikers are very rarely underrated as they are either highly rated because they score goals or deemed redundant because they don't score enough. That made it hard to choose strikers who are underrated so I only choose one. Campbell started his career at Man Utd and does have himself an England cap after being called up in a friendly managed by Stuart Pearce. Campbell has had his injury set-backs in the past but shows his quality whenever he plays and has shown that Cardiff this season. He's scored some crucial goals and that's no surprise as he makes very clever runs and is a top finisher. He's smart, quick, and surprisingly good in the air, there will be a few teams contacting his agent over the summer.
