Ernie! Head Up Chief, C'mon

Two 0-0 draws and a 2-2 draw against some of the worst teams in the A-League would usually make for rather depressing reading. You'd think that this meant serious questions being asked and many fans lamenting another season of hope, without much produce in the way of success for the Wellington Phoenix. But that's not the case, head up lads and ladies out there who support the Nix.

Yesterday the Nix came from behind to grab the draw against the Newcastle Jets who are almost in as much shit as the Gold Coast Titans. 2-2 against a side who finished with 10 men and are currently 2nd to last, 20 points behind our Nix, it doesn't make for great reading.

But we must look to Ernie for guidance, the man charged with turning the Nix into servants of attacking football, as he provides us with wisdom and encouragement. Despite lacking a killer instinct in front of goal, which would have probably given the Nix a three game win streak, the Nix are still dominating proceedings, they are creating chances and controlling games of football. Ernie's the first to tell us this and I don't see why we shouldn't do anything but fully get in behind Ernie's words and ride the wave.

Against the Jets, we once again saw a bit of an issue with getting the ball in to the back of the net, but there were enough signs there that there's no need to panic. This week we saw a bit more balance with either Nathan Burns or Roy Krishna making something happen on a flank, and the other in the box gearing themselves up for an opportunity. I doubt that's something that either of these two lads have had to do too much of in their careers, they're both quick, skilled players and love to take on defenders, I can't imagine they spent their younger days posted up in the box ready to knock one home.

I'm going to repeat myself but you can't question the movement of these two when they're finding space in the box, they just struggle to get a decent goal-bound touch on crosses. They'll get there, don't worry about that.

The only issue was for a chance that Krishna missed at the near post, with no other Phoenix player in the box waiting for the ball to come across, despite the fact that most of the Nix were in the Jets' half, the defender could bully Krishna in to hitting it wide. The game plan certainly looks to be wreak havoc with the pace out wide and get it in to the box, but there needs to be more of a threat than one lad ... especially in games where you're dominating.

62.7% possession vs 37.3%

21 shots vs 7

16 shots from inside the box vs 5

6 shots on target vs 1

498 passes vs 296

28 crosses vs 14

82.5% passing accuracy vs 65.2%

I'm not clutching at straws here, there were many positives and I'm all in on the Ernie positivity. The first goal from the Jets was off a corner, Manny Muscat headed the ball on to Roly and then in to the net while the second was also off a corner, shitty marking but a good finish. Had any of the Nix's chances gone in, they win but they showed that they've got the ability to stay in these games, not let them get away from them and make something of it at the end.

Krishna tapped one in at the far post to further complicate his previous misses while Jason Hicks grabbed the goal to make it 2-2 late in the contest. Besides their domination of the the Jets, it wasn't looking like the Nix's day but they came back, they put a few away and got the draw.

The Nix aren't losing these games, like they would have previously.

An away fixture at the Melbourne Victory provides the exact challenge that the Phoenix need a this time. This is a big game on a big stage and the Phoenix won't have as much time on the ball against the Victory who sit in 2nd. The Nix have looked good when they're in control against weaker teams despite their lack of goals but the Victory will offer something completely different. Which might be what the doctor ordered.
