Black Caps Black Book .../Diary - Attack Of The Plebs

First things first, the Black Caps won again. Boom. And they did so from a rather sticky situation as Sri Lanka did a good job to dismantle our top order, hence it was on the shoulders of Grant Elliott and Luke Ronchi to save the innings.

Keep in mind that no other Black Cap batsmen scored over 26, evidence again of the fact that you can't expect everyone to get runs every game but we need to expect someone to get runs.

Grant Elliott batted beautifully, getting in firstly and then keeping things moving in a positive direction. Top shelf middle order batting that and he may have just played Tom Latham out of the starting 11 as he showcased his experience and gap hitting ability.

Luke Ronchi, well he just did what he's done in the past year really. The only difference being that this time around he had much more time, more time to get in, more time to go bang.

It's a nice combination it that middle order. We must keep in mind that Elliott and Ronchi both rep Wellington and they have played a fair amount of cricket together, which when you sprinkle in their copious amounts of experience makes for a very solid middle order.

Ronchi and Brad Haddin will play the same role for their respective teams. It's going to be awesome to see who has the better World Cup, I'll be keeping tabs on this.

It had to be Ronchi and Elliott, didn't it? They aren't our superstars, they're just team guys who can contribute when called on. Shout out to them and I hope they don't take me calling them plebs as an insult. Shout out to Elliott as well for doing exactly what a guy in his position needed to do.

You could view the fact that no one else got any runs as a negative, but that's going to happen. Should Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor fail, someone has to stand up and in the past no one has stood up, hence we get those horrible collapses. Maybe once in every five games all four of our top order will fail, that's when these performances are needed.

What mustn't be overlooked is that Trent Boult took four wickets and ran through the Sri Lankan middle order. Hopefully Boult can build on this confidence building performance and kick on because the more bowlers we have firing the better.

It was a tick for the bowlers as they didn't rely on the huge total they were defending, they bowled Sri Lanka out. Boult, Tim Southee and Mitch McClenaghan all took wickets which is fantastic for me because they're the bowling attack I want in crunch time.

Corey Anderson was once again expensive, but much like with the bat, having Elliott there covers up for that. Elliott took two wickets and when it's not Elliott's day with the ball, at least it might be Cozza's day. That's a huge option for B-Mac when he's trying to figure out his bowling balance.

It must be said that Sri Lanka bowled like crap at the death. This isn't a biggie, hence I didn't raise it earlier but we'd be rather pissed if Ronchi didn't hit all those full tosses and half volleys over the boundary. But he did, so job done.

The bigger picture? Well overall we got contributions from guys who needed to contribute - Elliott and Boult especially. There's two more games in this series so it would be nice to see Elliott chip in with a few 30's, 40's or 50's after the top order get some runs.

With Adam Milne nursing his side strain thing, Boult might have a chance to step up and take wickets. Now if Boult performs strongly in these remaining two ODI's then Milne may have just given a sucker an even break.

All we need now is King Rossco to hit a few huh?
