Black Caps Black Book ... /Diary - What More Could You Ask For?
Well there we have it folks, the World Cup is underway, the Black Caps are 1-0 and we looked bloody good. In a sense it was the perfect opening day for the World Cup, Hagley Park was buzzing, that dude won a milly while our lads simply did the business.
I kicked my feet up and refrained from making any major judgement on the Black Caps until they had played some cricket on some sort of stage. While Sri Lanka were reasonably mediocre, a fact that must be noted, in terms of the rather festive occasion, with cricket fans and those who couldn't give a rat's backside from across the land of the long white cloud tuned in, the Black Caps could have done no more.
This performance against Sri Lanka just oozed professional, the Black Caps went about their business in a classy manner. I got the sense that while they were relieved to get this one out of the way, the very enjoyed the moment but definitely have an eye on the bigger price. While the runs, wickets, win boxes were ticked, the Black Caps have made a habit of doing all the little things well.
There's no need for Brendon McCullum to stay in for 30-40 overs and end up on a billion runs, while that would be rather nice, B-Mac/NattyMac just has to get the innings off to a slick start. We saw that his onslaught at the start of the innings allowed our batsmen to follow the smart pattern of ODI cricket - whack, work it around, whack.
Our line up is perfectly set up for that. It's going to be interesting to see if B-Mac and Martin Guptill can maintain their good form at the top, I get the feeling that we won't see them both dismissed early on too often in this World Cup.
It's perfectly set up because if ... I mean when B-Mac gets out (his style means he will get out) we've got the best wee lad to come in and not only get the ship on course, but not let the opposition build off of the wicket.
Corey Anderson and Luke Ronchi, what more can be said about them? I am eager to see them face some death bowling of a much higher quality. Can they create six-hitting opportunities when bowlers are consistently executing their plans? We'll soon find out.
The Black Caps took 10 wickets with each one of our top line bowlers taking 2 a piece. Job done.
The bowling attack we saw yesterday is equally as nice as the batting line up, each lad has the ability to do something different, but they can all execute a wide range of skills as well. We saw the benefits of having some premier swing bowlers, we saw Adam Milne's pace come in to play while we also saw that Daniel Vettori could be keen to make a statement at this World Cup.
Vettori could well be one of our most important players thanks to his accuracy throughout the middle stages, but he doesn't need to play every game. Nathan McCullum is good enough to play against the likes of Scotland, which will allow Vettori a bit of a break (same with Mitchell McClenaghan coming in for a pace bowler) and give him the chance to stay on point for the bigger games.
#DoYourJob is the only way the Black Caps will win the World Cup, if each players does what is required on that day. There's this vibe that the Black Caps give off, they appear workmanlike, they're experience, they've been around the block and they've learned a lot.
Every players is eager to do their job and they're good enough to do it well. As a few other teams in the World Cup juggle distractions or battle constant questions, the Black Cap players can just go about their business.
I've gone with Corey Anderson for my MVP GC P-I-M-P. 75 off 46 balls and 2/18 off 3.1 overs ... if keeps that up he could well find himself among esteemed company.
My Undercover Brother is the one and only Danny V. 2/34 off his 10 overs, 3.40 runs an over, that's vintage Vettori and hopefully he'll continue to serve up what's needed throughout the Cup.
