Black Caps Black Book .../Diary - Usual Dosage #DoYourJob

The Black Caps served up the usual dosage against Pakistan yesterday. Usual dosage as in another great performance in what was essentially a warm up game. Ya know what's crazy? The Black Caps are about to play a few 'warm up' games ahead of the World Cup, despite just playing 9 of them.  Go figure.

I'll get all the Negative Ned out of my system at the start, but I don't even feel like I'm being negative, I'm just being realistic. Pakistan would have treated these games as an extended opportunity to get amongst our conditions and tinker with their plans and strategies. As they should.

Once again it's hard to judge the Black Caps with the World Cup as context, as they play against a team who they should always beat in Aotearoa. It's just odd how happy we all are, it's cool I like it but it's a bit odd. These games don't hold a great deal of relevance to the World Cup because once that World Cup switch is turned on, everything changes.

But, we won and we won easily yesterday because the lads did their job. As they have all summer, as they have throughout these 9 warm up, warm up games.

If I was going to pick a single take away from this game it would be Martin Guptill. Sure, it's nice to see Guppy get some runs but as the opener and anchor, he did his job perfectly. He did his job perfectly because Ross Taylor was there batting at the end, doing what he does best giving it a fair whack to where ever he pleased.

Brendon McCullum, Kane Williamson and Taylor score runs. Simple, with them at the crease the score board is going to be ticking over and this puts a great responsibility on them as the top order. That starts with Guptill who if he sticks out the first 20 overs, he's done his job because B-Mac will give it a whack at the start, Prince Kane will manipulate the field through the middle stages and Taylor can do it all.

We've got a nice middle order, but the responsibility must sit with the top four. If these lads are batting well and doing their job then the Black Caps will challenge anyone. The key thing being these lads doing their job, it's something we've heard a lot from this Black Caps group and is a mantra that all the best sports teams adopt.

The job of Grant Elliot, Corey Anderson and Luke Ronchi is to get runs quickly at the end or it's to get the innings back on track if the opposing bowlers have a good day. These guys have shown that they can do their job, but do we want them to be in such a position? Nah, we've got three of the best batsmen in the world so the more they do, the better.

I guess that's the problem with Black Caps sides of the past, that the top order simply didn't do their job.

It was great to see the bowlers share the wickets, although Pakistan's openers got off to a great start and laid a solid platform, similar to the Black Caps. The difference being there wasn't much after that, which could be put down to constant effort from our bowlers.

The more I see Trent Boult bowl, the more I'm convinced that he's got to be there. The tricky piece of the puzzle being whether to take Adam Milne or Mitchell McClenaghan, but that's only an issue in the latter stages of the tournament. It's becoming clear that the bowling attack will be tinkered for each game as they've all shown that they can do their job.

Do your job. Fuck all these other bullshit hashtags. The only hashtag that we'll use with the Black Caps is #DoYourJob. Because that's how the Black Caps will win the World Cup.

Oh wait, sorry I got too far ahead of myself. #DoYourJob will result in the Black Caps earning the right to join Australia and South Africa as favourites as they'll #DoYourJob in pressure situations against desperate teams and players.

There's been no pressure or desperation from opposing teams/players in these 9 warm up, warm up games #JustSaying

C'mon guys, #DoYourJob and get your handshakes right.
