Black Caps Black Book .../Diary - 5th And Final, Wait, We're Not So Good At Finals

I can appreciate that this ODI series has been highly entertaining with runs flowing and boundaries peppered. And then I remember that for England, this is their World Cup.

I came to remember that because each ODI provides a new record, England have scored this many or that many, which while records and statistics clearly hold a significant place in cricket, are getting tiresome. We get it England, you can now score runs and hit sixes.

But this is their World Cup, well their version of the Black Caps performances at the World Cup. Their skipper Eoin Morgan has shown how fragile form is after a horrible World Cup campaign; his scores so far are 50, 88, 71 and 113 and he's now firming as the saviour of England's limited overs cricket.

Their much talked about new style of cricket, well the success they are having with that mirrors that of the Black Caps.

The buzz around England's cricket team, fueled by these record breaking efforts, also mirrors that of the Black Caps and the public of Aotearoa.

It's all a bit de-ja-vu-ish right? Yes, and borderline disgusting.

We were first, we did this all before you, we're better than you and you're going to lose because you're pretending!

As I predicted after the Black Caps lost the first ODI, much to the disgust of kiwi cricket fans, this series has gone back and forth. Each ODI has seen one team step up and demand victory, while each game has also produced memorable batting performances.

But each game has seen reasonably poor bowling, which when done on pitches that help the batsman, results in lots of runs. Game five, the final of this series will be all about our bowlers.

Our bowlers who couldn't defend 350 and failed at that task miserably with England chasing that down only losing three wickets.

You can't fault an effort with the bat in which you score 350. Kane Williamson scored 90 off of 70 balls with his strokes hardly resembling the swashbuckling nature of everyone else's, which also took him to 3000 ODI runs. Nice company you keep there Prince Kane...

Williamson's now scored 45, 93, 118 and 90 #Prince.

Grant Elliot Watch - 55, a much needed 55 means those on Grant Elliot Watch are smiling. This handy knock takes him to 5/10 for the series.

Martin Guptill will take the cake as my low key most impressive performer from the series. He scored 53 off 88 at the top of the innings as Brendon McCullum went about his pinch hitting role and Guppy has hit two 50's of a solid nature. Nothing to really celebrate, but he's performed in the 'do your job' style that I love.

A solid batting effort put us in a strong position, but our bowlers couldn't quite hold up their end of the bargain. England are enjoying a prosperous run with the bat, but maybe the reason I'm not enjoying how much they're loving that fact is because I haven't really seen our bowling attack perform at their best, or close to it.

I don't expect any Englishman to notice that fact however, so whatever.

That does come with an caveat however as we all know we don't have our strongest bowling attack on the field. Some see this as an excuse or a reason of our struggles in defending a big score and taking wickets as we failed to do both in game four, but I love it and it sets up a huge challenge for the fifth and deciding ODI this weekend.

Our bowling attack is different now; one of our best is at home and the other isn't quite at his best, our strike bowler leaks runs and didn't strike in game four while our Mr Reliable is still learning how to be Mr Reliable and the newbie is only a few games into his ODI career, oh and it's the same story with our main spinner.

I don't care about England, I don't care how many records they're breaking nor do I care about how much fun they are having. I just want to see if this bowling attack can stop them.

And stop them in a series decider, the biggest game of this series. This is why I was excited about this England tour and series, because we're turning a corner, we're seeing who is going to be a part of this team long into the future.

Don't be sucked into thinking that the batsmen aren't quite performing. They have well and truly done their jobs over the series and did so again in game four, this is all about the bowlers. Whether we win or lose, well that's not as important as seeing that our bowlers can bowl a good length, that they can hit a yorker (strange) when called upon and that they can not dish up deliveries that deserve to be hit for six. Even deliveries that don't really deserve that treatment, but offer enough of an opportunity to get that treatment, none of them.

I mean I do care about the result because doing all of that will stop England's flow of runs and stop them crowing about that flow of runs.

Black Caps bowling attack, what ya got!?
