Women's One-Day Competition: Update #2
Canterbury will head into a cheeky break for the Women's Big Bash League across the ditch with four wins from four games and as the only unbeaten team from the opening stanza of the Women's One-Day competition. Auckland sit in 2nd with three wins, while Wellington have two wins with Otago and Northern sitting on just one win a piece.
Unfortunately for Otago, they were the victims of a rampant Canterbury double-header with the Cantabs winning Saturday's game by 7 wickets and then backing that up with a 41-run win. Amy Satterthwaite once again turned in a star hand as her 4/23 (3.95rpo) was crucial in dismissing Otago for 190, along with support from White Fern Lea Tahuhu who took 2/38 (4.75rpo) and Hayley Jensen who took 2/22 (2.44rpo).
Otago's White Fern Katey Martin top-scored for them with 70, but this was the Satterthwaite show as she then hit 67 off 80 balls to give Canterbury a win in 39 overs.
While Satterthwaite was key with the ball in the Sunday fixture, her White Ferns comrade Erin Bermingham put Canterbury in a strong position with her 125 off 112 balls. Bermingham finished with a strike-rate of 111.60 and with support from Jensen (65 off 79), Canterbury reached 251/5 from their 50 overs and 98 from Otago and White Ferns skipper Suzie Bates couldn't get Otago close.
Bates scored at 79.67sr, however she didn't have a whole lot of support and Otago were dismissed for 210 in the 49th over. Satterthwaite took 3/36 (4rpo) and Kate Broadmore led the bowling effort with 4/14 off just 5.2 overs; Broadmore's played 23 ODI games and 33 T20s, but hasn't represented Aotearoa since July last year.
Auckland also went back to back with wins over CD. Auckland kept CD to 152/9 off their 50 overs on Saturday and chased it down in the 38th over, 8 wickets down before they again chased CD's target of 168 down fairly easily in reaching 171/1 in the 34th over. Anna Peterson stood out as the top performer across both games as she hit 79* on Sunday along with 1/24 (2.40rpo), plus 3/41 (4.10rpo).
Former White Fern Sara McGlashan hit 43 and 35* in what was a dominant performance from the Auckland top order with Peterson opening the batting.
Wellington rounded off the back to back wins as they put ND in the shade, chasing 168 and 214 down in under 40 overs. Ireland's Eimear Richardson is the name of note here as she hit 56 and 62 opening the batting for Wellington and she is formed a formidable top-three alongside White Ferns Rachel Priest and Sophie Devine, both of whom passed 50 on Sunday. Priest hit 50 off 42 balls and Devine blazed 75 off just 40 balls as Wellington chased down 214 in just 29.1 overs at 7.50rpo.
Richardson's two half-centuries pushes her up to 4th in the top run-scorers rankings on 179 runs (44.75avg), 8 runs ahead of Satterthwaite who has 171 runs at 42.75avg. Natalie Dodd is 2nd on 202 runs at 50.50 while Canterbury's Frances Mackay still leads the run-scorers with 224 runs at 224avg.
Cantebury are undefeated thanks to having the three best bowlers in the competition; Satterthwaite has 11 wickets (9.72avg/3.54rpo), Broadmore has 7 wickets (8.42avg/3.21rpo) and Tahuhu has 7 wickets (22.85avg/4.21rpo).
We won't see kiwi women's domestic cricket until late December, but we've got a fair amount of kiwi talent in the Women's Big Bash League so stay tuned for all the information you need in the coming days.
