Hard & Fast: Plunket Shield Leaders

He bats with an Aero bat, so he must be a bowler right? Sorry Aero.

After a cheeky break in Plunket Shield cricket, the action gets underway again tomorrow. Auckland face Central Districts in Auckland, Otago host Canterbury in Invercargill and Wellington host Northern Districts in Wellington.

There are only four rounds left, so what better time then to take a look at who's leading the way in our premier domestic cricket competition.

First and foremost, Auckland have a healthy lead at the top of the table. They're on 85 points, Canterbury are on 71 points and Wellington are on 67 points which is handy as they are all facing bottom three teams this round.

Scott Kuggeleijn leads the bowlers with 33 wickets from six games at an average of 24.84. Kuggeleijn is 24 years old and is leading the Knights' bowling attack with Tim Southee and Trent Boult absent. Kuggeleijn is joined by fellow right-arm medium pacer Joel Baker (4th) in the top-five wicket-takers as Baker has 21 wickets  at an average of 27.71.

Ish Sodhi, also a Knight is 2nd with 22 wickets as a slightly better average (29.22) has him above Jeetan Patel (31.27) who also has 22 wickets. Sodhi's only played four games so that's quite a haul, however he won't feature in the run home as he'll be in India at the World T20.

There are four bowlers on 20 wickets. Todd Astle has an average of 27.40, Wellington's Dane Hutchinson 34.15, Ajaz Patel's a left-arm spinner from CD with an average of 37.60 and Brent Arnel, the veteran seamer's working at 40.70.

The Knights have a strong presence at the top of the bowling ranks despite sitting almost 40 points behind Auckland and the fact that they only have one batsman in the top 10 might be why. Bharat Popli, a young right-hander actually leads all run-scorers with 679 runs at an average of 61.72, two centuries and four 50s.

Brad Wilson, the veteran Otago opener and former ND Knight is 2nd with 646 runs at 53.83, coming via two centuries and five 50s.

CD have two fine young batsmen in Ben Smith and George Worker, who are ranked 3rd and 4th. Smith has 628 runs at 62.80 while Worker has 575 runs at 71.87 and Worker's the only batsman to hit three centuries this season.

In 5th is Wellington's Stephen Murdoch with 530 runs at 48.18.
