#KiwiWBBL03 Whetu: Lea Tahuhu and Melbourne Renegades Chasing WBBL03 Semi-Finals
Even though we have three of the best female cricketers in the world, the Women's Big Bash League this summer is yet to see Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine and Amy Satterthwaite really dominate. They have definitely been solid and it's rather exciting to know that as finals cricket approaches, there is scope for these three to explode and lead their teams to glory.
The #KiwiWBBL yarn thus far has instead been Lea Tahuhu's emergence as one of the best bowlers in WBBL03. Last summer, Tahuhu wasn't much of a factor for Melbourne Renegades with 9w in 13inns @ 31.33avg/5.75rpo and that had her ranked outside of the top-20 bowlers; not the best return for an import and consistent international.
Tahuhu has been joined by Satterthwaite and the arrival of her White Ferns homie as Renegades skipper may have helped Tahuhu level-up. In just 9inns, Tahuhu currently has 13w and with more wickets in less games at this stage compared to a full WBBL last summer, Tahuhu now sits as the 4th best bowler. Tahuhu has taken a wicket in 8 of 9inns and put up a 2w streak through 3inns earlier in December, before taking her best tally of 3/25 in her last outing.
Those 3w didn't help Renegades against Hobart Hurricanes though and Hurricanes notched their first win of WBBL03. Renegades (5th) are in a very funky spot along with Thamsyn Newton's Perth Scorchers (6th) as they sit outside the semi-finals on 10points, yet they are only a couple wins away from setting up shop in the semi-finals; Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers are up top with 14points, Brisbane Heat 3rd on 12points and Sydney Sixers 4th on 10points.
Renegades have one of the best bowlers in WBBL03 thanks to Tahuhu's seamers, yet they lack a dominant batter that the better teams have. Amy Satterthwaite's obviously a gun and she is Renegades' best batswoman (35avg/113.36sr), but she's 8th in runs and is the only Renegade in the top-10. For Renegades to seal a semi-final spot, they won't exactly need to offer more support to Tahuhu with the ball as they have three other bowlers including Satterthwaite's offies, who have taken 10w. Only 14 bowlers in WBBL03 have taken 10w thus far, Renegades have four of them.
Support needs to come from the batters and that's even more important when you consider that Tahuhu's the most expensive bowler in the top-10 and is the only bowler conceding over 7rpo; Tahuhu is a strike-weapon. Renegades need to put more runs on the board first up and give Tahuhu a buffer, or they need to be capable of chasing higher scores and that requires Satterthwaite to explode.
Obviously there are many other players who need to contribute, I'm only bothered about my #KiwiWBBL perspective though and that has me pondering how Satterthwaite and Tahuhu lead the rest of their team. I don't want Brisbane Heat making the semi-finals because they've got no kiwis, so for Renegades to slide into the semi-finals there has to be some sort of improvement from Satterthwaite and Tahuhu.
If Tahuhu can keep taking 2w and get below 7rpo, while Satterthwaite blasts her way into the top-5 run-scorers over the next few weeks then I'm confident Renegades can get into 3rd or 4th. It's been business as usual with their two kiwi imports being their two best players, they just need to take that further to lead Renegades into WBBL03 finals.
Peace and love 27.
