A Week In Hip Hop
I don't think I've been this excited about writing about stuff before. Why? Because New Zealand's taking over that's why! We know exactly how to serve up that South Pacific funk for the world and it's awesome that I can write about how kiwis are doing they thang in the hip hop and general funk world. I just love life.
I woke up one day this week and saw on Twitter that Jay Rock had dropped a new track which was pretty awesome because Rock's probably my favourite Top Dawg Entertainment artist. Follow Me Home follows me everywhere, guys who can balance that gangsta and poetic storytelling just sound fucking legit. Umm, then it's produced by a New Zealander @SmokeyGotBeatz. And that the beat is the exact reason I love Jay Rock, it's that West West yo! It's cool and Rock will have all the TDE fiends anticipating his nek move. It's the same old Jay Rock that we've heard spit that gangsta fire, keeping it real and it's the type of music that puts you in a certain attitude where you might, ugh riot or something, like demand change in society and shit. Please don't sleep on how awesome this is...
Next up on the kiwi love list are @Peace who dropped this cool video for their tune 'Matter'. It's all round gold from the song, to the creative juices oozing out of the video. Definitely something to make you a wee bit proud because there aren't many artists who are keen to put out a video with a little concept (shock horror!) let alone try something a wee bit different. Dopeness. Go check em out in a town near you as they tour their collabo with the Plutonian Noise Symphony kicking off in Queenstown tonight!
Can't forget YGB comrades Team Dynamite who opened for the one and only Lil Jon last night.
If you haven't heard of The Doqument then here ya go. Local hip hop lads who have that real sound down pact mixed with a bit of kiwi ruthless yet kickbacked vibe. I mean you could talk about how NZ hip hop has fallen off, or you could watch this...
To be honest, I was gonna write about some other stuff - how Lupe Fiasco continues to have issues with Atlantic records, yawn. Oh, but that does mean we'll get a new mixtape from Lu - 'Lost In The Atlantic' which I'm semi looking forward, mostly not. Lu hasn't done much for me lately.
Bobby Shmurda complained about not getting paid from his record label - peep the trend here. And you know we don't give no fux to lame ass 'beef' like Iggy Azalea and Snoop Dogg (<3 you Snoop) - C4 to your door, no beef no more.
But really, all I care about is NZ. So shout out to dem kiwis.
