Childish Gambino - STN MTN/Kauai

It's pretty hard to stay on the pulse of absolutely everything, so Gambino's new mixtape 'STN MTN/Kauai' hosted by Mr Gangsta Grillz DJ Drama kinda crept up on me.

I'm super glad it did as well because I had no real idea what to expect from the rapper in short shorts. The rapper who'd rather be on the beachThe rapper who sings. The rapper who has a television career.

Fuck that, fuck ya'll and the po po's, down under surfing on the Gold Coast

Over the weekend I was treated to a mixtape that covered all the basis. As with any 'mixtape' rappers are expected to bring fire, that's the point. You've got a collection of beats that varies from the quintessential mixtape beat - Go DJ, to those produced by Gambino himself - Candler Road as well a few contributions from others.

If you've got any doubts about Gambino's lyrical ability, this tape will put things in perspective. Tracks like Go DJ, All Yall and Dream/Southern Hospitality see Gambino go hard. Harder than many rappers go, throw in to the mix that Gambino can sing a melody, ouch.

Childish Gambino has the ability to go hard on a track and switch up the flow as he switches up rhyme schemes. It makes listening to him intriguing, you're not there predicting what bar he's gonna throw up, you're simply waiting and enjoying.

Pop Thieves (Make it feel good) is the epitome of Gambino's singing. He's not going to out sing many singers, but it's uniquely Gambino. It sounds like there's a touch of auto tune in use, but nothing to make you scoff, it's smooth. The same can be said for the track Sober, where Gambino serenades the funky little beat with some lovely, it's like a slow moving, yet quirky ride through a type of music that I can't really see being replicated by anyone.

When your song is on and your hand's in mine, make it feel good.

Umm, did I mention that Jaden Smith makes an appearance? On Late Night in Kauai, Smith drops some poetry which it is unclear whether it's Gambino's work or Smith's, but either way it's a smooth little interlude. Raps? Singing? Spoken word? Ah, it's like a musical orgasm in a tape.

I didn't really want to spend this whole time writing about Gambino vs Drake. It's pretty easy to make the comparison, they both spit bars and can sing. But for me Gambino's funk is the difference. The variety of beats (sometimes not even beats, more like music), the variety of music that Gambino can grace with his voice is much more extensive than Drake's.

Childish Gambino is just so much more fun to listen to. Every song on this tape is a funky journey through a time that resembles sun, water and flowers., it's free spirited, there's no creative restrictions, it's how music should be. It's going to accompany me through summer.

Your booty's so retro.
