NehruvianDOOM - A Review

Were you part of the few who knew Nehru before he blew?

No. I wasn't, I found out about the NehruvianDOOM project and eagerly awaited it. Anyone who gets to collaborate with DOOM has a free pass because well, you know they're cool and can obviously rock a mic. Digging deeper and learning that this Bishop Nehru character was only a teenager peaked the interest even more, I was now waiting.

To be honest, NehruvianDOOM covers every base you could want from a musical project. There's a common element throughout with various themes and samples being present, peep the meditation lessons, as well as content varying from - a girl on 'Mean The Most', determination to achieve on 'Great Things' to a slightly darker more reflective vibe on 'So Alone'. There's DOOM's signature sound of beats in all sorts of forms, there's two top MC's spitting fire and it has foundations in a spirit that is enlightened working for a better society. Cheesy huh.

It's a very well thought out project, there's no fat. It's a thoroughbred, with no room for anything that doesn't add to the entire album. Sure, there's plenty of funky little samples that might take some getting used to if you haven't heard much DOOM before, but they more than serve a purpose. They set the tone of the album, sharing an insight in to the thoughts behind the album and with only 9 tracks on the album there's no wasted space, even if it is a lady telling you how to thrive in times of hardship (Caskets).

I'm moving with the all black tactic
Black kicks, black jeans, black jacket matchin' - Nehru on Caskets

There's many rappers out there today who follow a rhyme scheme that doesn't offer much variety and usually follows the formula of la la la la la cat, la la la la la bat, la la la la la rat #simple. Combining supreme rhymes and word play is pretty hard to do but it's something that Nehru does on a frequent basis. Nice, is term to complement one's rhymes - he got some nice rhymes. Nehru's rhymes are definitely nice (Darkness)...

This life is like a mystery, look how the worlds sent to me
Today I'm in the industry, next I'm ended history
Physically won't allow it, my mental is not a coward
Still thoughts are devoured worried bout if nows the hour
Getting showered in this bad news, bombings and capped schools
Need capsules for my brains strain that's the pads route

I had to get that out of my system early on because I could copy and paste pretty much all the lyrics as it's pretty much every verse. Nehru is the type of young rapper who's mic ability is matched by his wisdom, which at the age of 18 is pretty freaking awesome.

Turn up the temperature, Villian and the Emperor, ya'll ain't ready like doomsday prepperers - DOOM on Disastrious

DOOM is all over this tape as well. The production has his sound all over it with quirky samples used throughout, he throws up different sounds and noises but continues to serve up something which serves as a great canvas for rhymes. One of my favourite moments is when a meditation lesson is partnered with a squeaky voice kinda like that of Quasimoto (yeah, you know) talking some cheeky shit on 'Om'. In fact 'Om' is just pure fire

I have no problems in saying that 'NehruvianDOOM' is a classic. Easy. This is a 18 year old kid who appears to have mastered the word play and rhyme schemes needed as well as spitting knowledge, every song is different with Bishop Nehru able to venture down any path. DOOM's rhymes and production is on par with what we have come to expect from the masked one - top shelf. It's fun, there's no uber serious moments with more serious matters interwoven in each of their rhymes so nicely that you don't really pick it up. They represent pure hip hop and they'll never relinquish that.

Am I being idolized, or am I a pair of idle eyes - Nehru on Om

I struggled with whether this album was more about the emergence of Bishop Nehru as a legit hip hop king pin rapper extraordinaire, or just another awesome DOOM project. Then I stopped being dumb and thought it was a combination of both. A delightful mix of youth and experience, two individuals uniquely talented who share a similar mindset. It's pretty awesome.
