The Offseason Octopus

The NRL draw was released yesterday, just as Sydney went in to lock down for obvious reasons. Personally I couldn't give two shits or a rat's backside about the release of the NRL draw, I don't know why - maybe it's because growing up, the Warriors always had the rough end of the stick. Maybe it's because when other teams complain about having a short turn around here, a long flight there, the Warriors have had to put up with that for years.

Maybe it's because every year the NRL draw serves as another example of a severe lack of common sense at NRL HQ. That's probably the biggest reason, somehow the NRL always manages to stuff it up with a rather amazing lack of brain power used in forming the 26 rounds ... but we come to expect that. Throw on top of that people saying "oh this team has a good draw and this team has to play these guys then these guys"- another thing I've learned from the Warriors is that nothing from the previous season/November, December, January or February really matters. Trying to predict the NRL is a pretty difficult task, so excuse me while I go about my regular business.

Ah, jeepers creepers I can't go about my regular business because some dimwits keep getting in trouble! It's like a never ending cycle with the NRL and it's borderline terrible. Paul Carter, can you believe this will be sacked by the Gold Coast Titans for another drink driving offence ... drink driving after being caught for drink driving a few months earlier isn't the brightest thing to do. Congrats to the Titans for taking the swift action, it would have been tough as Carter is a young player with promise and he's a tough bugger so I'm sure they would have liked to have keep him. But Carter's proven to be a silly bugger, so what can ya do?

The other dimwit is Jamil Hopoate, who hadn't quite cracked the NRL but from all reports is quite talented - as you would expect from the Hopoate clan. I prefer to take the angle of congratulating the Hopoate's on raising such a delight in William Hopoate as opposed to pointing out all their misgivings. Jamil Hopoate has been sacked by Manly after being found guilty of assault, silly bugger.

So many silly buggers, when will they learn? Playing in the NRL is a job, a fantastic job so don't be a silly bugger.

I wouldn't put Brett Morris in the silly bugger category but, well he can go in the slightly more silly, silly buggers group (less serious, more "awww you're so silly hehe"). Morris came out in the media basically sending a message to the Mata'utia brothers of Newcastle to come on over to the Bulldogs, haere mai!

This is slightly complex as the Mata'utia brothers of Newcastle (Pat, Chanel and Sione) had apparently signed a deal with the Doggies, but then apparently had not. They distanced themselves from their agent who had shuffled the papers together and seemed keen to stay with the Knights. So consider this a case of the Bulldogs hierarchy playing a few games, sending a message to the Mata'utia brothers of Newcastle that the door is still open ... Morris is just the messenger.

The Daily Telegraph's Buzz Rothfield has a weekly column and this week he explored the inner workings of Trent Robinson's support staff. First of all it's pretty amazing the level that the the Roosters are running things, I wouldn't say it's amazing in itself because this happens all around the world with professional sports - it seems the NRL is just catching on. But I'm going to switch this back to a local example, once again, the Warriors - are they anywhere near this level of forward (forward, but behind the likes of the EPL, NFL, NBA) thinking?

No, obviously not. Look at them, the owners would argue with each other as to who has the most money/the bigger penis. But it's the standard, the NRL despite being a wee bit backward is catching up to the rest of the sporting world and the likes of the Roosters and Rabbitohs are leading the way. I love it and I reckon that over the next few years we will clearly see which NRL clubs are the best in terms of the complete off-field package, which will directly influence on-field performance.
