The Panel
Standout performer
Chief Biggums - Robbie Farah, the current meta of the NRL is suiting his style of play with less stoppages and more action. Ran for 155 metres, set up a try and made a solid 40 tackles against a big Souths Pack.
Mystery Doctor - A lot of the Bulldog's points come from the work of Josh Reynolds and he was at his best again against the Panthers. He's a grub, a bit of a dick but he's one hell of a footy player.
The Bain - I'm gonna split it between Brett Morris' outrageous acrobatic try and then also Albert Kelly sealing the win for the gold coast titans. They desperately needed that win after a piss poor effort the week before. Just watch the Morris try if you haven't seen it...
Senor Spectre - Ben Hunt for the Broncos is my man. Question marks over his kicking game and ability to lead the team around the paddock but he came to the party on Friday night, scoring a couple of tries and setting them up too. Cooper Cronk looked superb as well, running the show like we know he can for the Storm.
Battler making his mark
Chief Biggums - Trent Merrin was beasting it in the Dragons game. He looked heaps better playing in the middle finished with 133 run metres and 42 tackles only second to the young bloke Mitch Rein with 47.
Mystery Doctor - Nathan Friend isn't making his mark so to speak but he is definitely someone who is overlooked on a regular basis. He did his typical work on defence but was also very nifty out of dummy half and it's a pity there weren't more players in support a lot of the time.
The Bain - Braith Anasta. I thought his effort against the Souths was solid. He did some great work that went unnoticed and lead the troops well. His guidance will significantly help the young gun Luke Brooks as the season goes on.
Senor Spectre - Steve Matai had a huge game on the weekend getting the game winner against the eels to cap off a double for him. He has had his fair share of injuries/suspensions but was back to his bruising best on the weekend.
Biggest think you learnt
Chief Biggums - NRL Wingers score incredible tries, but even they sometimes trip over nothing on the way to the try line. Thanks Antonio Winterstein. But honestly, you gotta love that moment of awe when you see a player get the ball down in seemingly impossible situations.
Mystery Doctor - The Tigers are the real deal and should make the eight. The proved they were the real deal by matching Souths physically up front and look to have a forward pack that is capable of anything ... Aaron Woods, Martin Taupua, James Gavet, Liam Fulton Keith Galloway etc hats of to you.
The Bain - Souths could be in a bit of trouble. They lost their key player G.I. and then everything just turned to mud. Also there were a few last minute injuries sending my boy John Sutton back to five eighth. Isaac Luke getting injured just made things a whole lot worse.
Senor Spectre - Are the Tigers the real deal?? The spine of Farah, Brooks and Tedesco has so far looked the goods, but it’s the forward pack providing the real grunt!! Woods and Galloway leading the charge, but a good group of young blokes backing up and providing a lot of impact.
Young gun watch
Chief Biggums - Semi Radradra scored a double in their last minute lost against Manly. Has all the assets to be a top tier winger, speed, power and good hands. Also set up one of niftiest tries of the season with some of his ad-lib Fijian style of play.
Mystery Doctor - Matt Moylan, he kicked the winning goal but his work at fullback for the Penrith Panthers is awesome. He's a gifted athlete but is also very good at distributing the ball and has the ability to pop up any where.
The Bain - The combination of James Tedesco and Luke Brooks. They just seem to know each others games so well. I really hope they can play at the Tigers for some time because the Tigers need some x factor like these blokes.
Senor Spectre - Rookie Melbourne winger Young Tonumaipea had a great game against the Knights as in keeping Justin O’Neill out of the side at the moment. Quick, strong and looking like a beast in the air, will he be their next Israel Folau??
Most impressive team performance
Chief Biggums - The Storm. As much as they annoy me, they are good at what they do. They just know how to win. They are not infallible but they know how to fix things when they go wrong, and they most certainly never give up. It's their mental game and attitude that sets them apart from most of the teams.
Mystery Doctor - The Titans were missing key half Aiden Sezer and then loss fullback William Zillman but were strong against the Raiders. Their forward pack will grind out a win against anyone ... especially teams with little strike power.
The Bain - I will go with the big Wah-Wahs. The New Zealand Warriors big win over the cowboys. Away from home, up against a strong outfit and in horrible form. They came up with the goods, even though they made it bloody hard for themselves. Close second and third are the Roosters and their comeback in the dying stages against the Broncs and also the nail biting Manly triumph over the Eels.
Senor Spectre -{cke_protected_3} I still like what the Titans did considering they didn’t have Aiden Sezer! The Dragons once against proved they could be here for the long run with another great performance. Don’t know what it is about them, but they look like a new and improved unit. Can’t just be the inclusion of Gareth Widdop can it?
Team/player that needs a hug
Chief Biggums - The Eels, they're trying so hard this year, and after leading with 1 minute to go and to have Manly pip them at the post - you gotta feel for them. Heads up Eels, Manly does that all the time.
Mystery Doctor - The Broncos, same reason as Mr Biggums picking the Eels. The Broncos were very good against the Roosters but were done by a team that just knows how to win. We should all give Alex McKinnon a hug as well.
The Bain -I said it last time and ill say it again. The Sharkies. Gave it their all and showed some of what they have to offer but once again came away with nothing. They need a win and they need it bad!!!
Senor Spectre - Quite obviously Alex McKinnon. Could be disabled after fracturing his neck on Monday night. Never good to see anything like that occur. Didn’t like the way Smith tried to blame McKinnon for ducking his chin in. I like Smith, but his comments reeked of arrogance. If his players hadn’t put McKinnon in a dangerous position then no harm would have been done.
